Samuel Inimbom Samuel
Samuel Inimbom Samuel (born September 01, 1958) is a Nigerian-born British-American physician and psychiatrist. Based in Arizona, United States, he holds certifications in general adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, brain injury medicine, and addiction medicine. Samuel is associated with the Vitalis Wellness Center in Phoenix, Arizona.
Biography
Samuel was born on September 01, 1958, in southeastern Nigeria to Alexander Samuel Ekwere and Joyce Alex Ekwere. He attended Ikot Ubo Central School and Atiamkpat Group School in Etinan and Awa, Akwa Ibom State. He completed his secondary education at St. Francis Secondary School, Ikot Ataku, Eket Local Government Area, graduating with distinction.
In 1980, he received a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences from the University of Calabar, formerly the University of Nigeria, Calabar Campus. He acquired a doctor of medicine (MD) degree from the University of Ibadan in 1986. The University of Ibadan was formerly affiliated with the University of London before becoming an independent institution in 1962.
After completing his medical degree, Samuel began postgraduate training in the United Kingdom. He pursued obstetrics and gynecology and passed Part One of the Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (MRCOG) examination. He held a locum senior house officer position at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Scotland, and in August 1996 became a substantive senior house officer in obstetrics and gynecology.
During his training, he developed an interest in psychiatry after encountering a patient with psychosis during labor. He later joined Warley Hospital in Brentwood, which became part of the North East London Hospitals NHS Trust, as a senior house officer in psychiatry. In August 1998, he was elected chairman of the Junior Doctors Forum of the NHS Trust and promoted to registrar in child and adolescent psychiatry under Kabir Padamsee, clinical director and consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist. He completed a three-year rotation in psychiatry and related specialties.
In June 2000, Samuel emigrated to the United States, where he completed further postgraduate training in psychiatry and its subspecialties. He undertook fellowship training through combined hospital programs at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital (now Mount Sinai Morningside) and Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.
Samuel later held professional privileges at several hospitals, including St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital in New York, Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, Mayo Clinic in Waycross, Georgia, and different Sharp HealthCare facilities in San Diego, California. He also held earlier appointments at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and the North East London Hospitals NHS Trust in the United Kingdom.
He became a British citizen in 1999 and an American citizen in 2014.
Samuel has received several professional recognitions. These include the Doctor of Excellence Award from the International Association of Healthcare Professionals (2014), the Lifetime Membership Award for Distinguished Professionals and Executives from Bristol International Who’s Who (2015), the “Best of the Best Psychiatrist” Award from The Macon Telegraph (2016), and the America’s Top Psychiatrist Award from the Consumer Research Council of America (2017). In 2023, he was named an Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM) and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (DFAACAP). He was featured in Best in Arizona Doctors magazine in 2024.
In addition, he is a tennis enthusiast who played at the college level, serving as the tennis captain for the University of Calabar, Nigeria, in 1977. He won the “Fun in the Sun “ 4.0 level tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2006, following which he was elevated to 4.5 level on the USTA tennis grading system.
Since 2021, he has been practicing as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Vitalis Wellness Center.
Inimbom is married to Nellie Idara Samuel (nee Nellie Idara Etuk). The couple were married on December 04, 1993, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. They have two children: Ruth and Caleb.
