S Society
The S society is a secret organization at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Unknown in origin, the society is most significant for its philanthropy to the College and community at large. Alternate names have been given as "The S club" or simply "the Society" taking their name from the single initial integral to their insignia. The founding date of the society is unknown, as are its activities and organizational structure. As with many secret societies, membership is rumored to remain secret until death. According to tradition, the society is based upon tenets of intellectualism, fraternity and the aforementioned philanthropy. Publicly displayed actions of the society have been accompanied by 'calling cards' taking the form of a printed society insignia or a hallmark red apple with a carved S or, sometimes, both. Other such societies at the College include the Seven Society, Order of the Crown and Dagger, the Wren Society, the Bishop James Madison Society, and the Flat Hat Club. “See also” 1
