Robert Brizel
Robert Brizel (born February 1, 1963, Catskill Mountains) is an American educator, internet boxing writer and photographer in the Northeastern United States, primarily in New York City, Newark, New Jersey, and the Atlantic City, New Jersey casinos.
Early Life
A native of Fallsburg, New York, who grew up next to a waterfall on the banks of the Neversink River, Brizel was an entrant in the original entering Kindergarten class at the newly created Benjamin Cosor Elementary School in the Fall of 1967, built behind the Brizel family home, when his father was a member of the Fallsburg School Board under then president Ben Cosor. Brizel served as master of ceremonies at the graduation of the first class to complete the seven year course of instruction of Benjamin Cosor Elementary School in 1974. A graduate of the Fallsburg High School Class of 1980, and an Irving Hertz Memorial Scholarship winner at Fallsburg in 1980, Robert Brizel became the first graduate of the 13 year complete course of study of the unified Fallsburg Central School District eligible to serve as its principal and superintendent in 1994.
Robert Brizel spent much of his formative years on the old campus and new campus of Sullivan County Community College in South Fallsburg and Loch Sheldrake, where he later graduated from, and where his father, the late Milton Brizel, was a founding father, math professor and trustee for four decades. Milton Brizel designed the only State University of New York community college casino gaming curriculum (in anticipation of gaming being approved) while on the Sullivan County Community College Board of Trustees. Robert's father was also part owner of The Flagler Hotel and Schenk's Paramount Hotel in South Fallsburg where Robert also spent time. Brizel began writing stories for boxing magazines in 1975 by reporting on televised boxing shows held at the Concord Resort Hotel in Kiamesha Lake, including such fighters as , Ray Mancini, and Hector Camacho.
Later career
A career educator in New York City since 1988, Brizel is one of the last survivors of the only group of educators brought into the New York City school system by the late schools chancellor Dr. . A New York State Challenger Fellowship winner in Education, and one of 22 elite Long Island University Fellowship winners in Educational Administration in the Educational Leadership program at LIU-Brooklyn run by the late Dr. and the first to complete the program, his mentors at LIU included the late Dr. Frank Mickens. Brizel holds five college degrees primarily in the writing and education fields. Brizel is a staff writer and photographer for Saddoboxing,a top boxing internet site and travels most frequently to cover boxing cards held in Atlantic City Casinos, most prominently Bally's Atlantic City, Resorts Casino Hotel, Tropicana Casino & Resort Atlantic City, Harrah's Atlantic City, Boardwalk Hall, and the Prudential Center in Newark. Brizel was the only boxing writer to write about the boxing contributions of Resorts Casino Hotel co-owner Dennis Gomes when he passed away in 2012. Brizel resides on Manhattan's Upper West Side and Moscow, Russia. His wife, a physician, is from Moscow. A doctoral candidate in education at Concordia University Chicago, Robert Brizel would become the first child of a founding father, member of the faculty and graduate of Sullivan County Community College eligible to serve as its president if successful. He is warden and trustee of the New York City Peter Cooper Lodge of the somewhat secretive three link Independent Order of Odd Fellows charitable fraternal order.
