Richard Carr (powerboat racer)
Richard Carr (born 1958) is a former English offshore powerboat racing British Champion.
He is still regarded as one of the United Kingdom’s most experienced and successful powerboat racers, who competed globally in the sport.
Career
Carr had been involved in boating since he was seven years old when he learned to sail a mirror dinghy, but only started racing when he was 25. He competed successfully at all levels from Class 2 UK National racing through to racing in Class 1 in Cougar Lamborghini later becoming Tekne Lamborghini, a 39’ Cougar catamaran, in which he raced in the UIM Class 1 Offshore World Championship and the European Championship.
Well known for his aggressive racing character, Carr won numerous domestic and international honours:
- British Class 1 Champion, 1991
- World Super V Unlimited Champion (OSS), 2011
Carr also finished second in the controversial 1992 Cowes Torquay Cowes after winning the Needles Trophy two weeks before, which was raced in difficult conditions and saw three of the top five finishers disqualified.
He returned to the sport in 2011, racing in the USA for team Geico.
Carr is also a businessman and entrepreneur and has run many multi million pound companies in the leisure, nightlife and commercial and residential development sectors.
In 2008, Carr was made personally bankrupt. He was entered into a 10 year Bankruptcy Restriction Undertaking after the discovery of what the Insolvency Service called his “unfit conduct”. He is barred from being a company director for 10 years.
In March 2014, he appeared in court faced with 41 charges of fraud, theft and dishonesty. The case is currently adjourned after all the defendants in the case pleaded not guilty.
