Religious text citation

Religious text citation or scripture citation refers to the citation of select portions of religious texts. In Abrahamic religions, it is customary to cite book chapter:verse from within the text.

Bible

A citation from the Bible is usually referenced with the book name, chapter number and verse number. Sometimes, the name of the Bible translation is also included. There are several formats for doing so.

A common example: This citation indicates that the book containing the cited passage is The Book of Genesis, chapter 3, verse 5, and the EDition being used is The Living Bible (TLB).

Both the Book of Mormon and Pearl of Great Price are divided into books, chapters and verses. The canonically-open Doctrine and Covenants, with editions specific to each denomination of the LDS movement, is divided into sections (containing each Conference-approved prophetic revelation up to the present) which are subdivided into verses.
