Ramón de Errázuriz Aldunate (23 May 1785 – 1875), commonly known as Ramón Errázuriz, was a Chilean lawyer and politician. He served as Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs from 1831 to 1832 and held seats in both the Chamber of Deputies of Chile and the Senate of Chile.

A member of the Liberal Party, he was briefly a presidential candidate in 1850.

Education

Errázuriz was born in Santiago on 23 May 1785, the son of Francisco Javier de Errázuriz y Madariaga and Rosa Martínez de Aldunate y Guerrero. His brothers included politicians Fernando Errázuriz Aldunate, Francisco Javier de Errázuriz Aldunate and Isidoro de Errázuriz Aldunate.

He studied at the Instituto Nacional and qualified as a lawyer in January 1838. He married Ana Bárbara Mayo Pinto, with whom he had three daughters.

Political career

Errázuriz became involved in Chilean public affairs during the independence period. In 1812, he signed the Provisional Constitutional Regulation as a private citizen and was elected a substitute member of the Senate established on 10 November of that year.

In 1823, he represented Santiago in its Provincial Assembly and was also elected substitute deputy for Santiago to the General Constituent Congress. In 1825, he was elected substitute deputy for Quillota to the Provincial Assembly of Santiago and took the seat as a full member after the elected representative, Ramón Ovalle, chose to represent La Ligua.

Errázuriz was elected deputy for Castro to the General Constituent Congress of 1828, although the congressional record notes that he was penalized for non-attendance.

In 1831, he was elected deputy for Ancud for the 1831–1834 legislative term. He served as vice president of the Chamber of Deputies from 15 June to 16 September 1831 and was a member of the Permanent Commission on Constitution.

On 31 August 1831, Errázuriz was appointed Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs while his brother Fernando Errázuriz Aldunate was serving as provisional vice president of Chile. He remained in the ministry after José Joaquín Prieto assumed the presidency on 18 September 1831 and served until 14 April 1832.

After an interval away from Congress, Errázuriz was elected deputy for Santiago for the 1843–1846 legislative term. He served on the Permanent Commission on Government and Foreign Affairs.

In 1846, he was elected to the Senate of Chile for the 1846–1855 term. He served on the Permanent Ecclesiastical Commission and the Permanent Commission on Government and Foreign Affairs, as well as on the Conservative Commission during several congressional recesses.

Errázuriz twice served as vice president of the Senate, first from 5 July to 6 August 1847 and again from 4 June 1849 to 11 June 1851.

In 1850, Errázuriz was put forward as a presidential candidate of the Liberal Party.

Errázuriz died in Santiago in 1875.
