Raúl Edwards
Raúl Edwards Mac-Clure (died 15 July 1927) was a Chilean farmer, businessman and politician who served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies for San Fernando from 1906 to 1909. A member of the National Party, he also served as mayor of Viña del Mar and fought in the British Army during the First World War.
Biography
Edwards was the son of Agustín Edwards Ross and María Luisa Mac-Clure. He studied at Colegio San Ignacio between 1899 and 1900 and later studied in Switzerland and France. He married Josefina de Ferari Valdés, with whom he had four children.
Edwards worked as a farmer and businessman. He was a director of the Banco de A. Edwards y Cía and, in 1923, vice president of the Sociedad Imprenta y Litografía Universo. He was also associated with the El Mercurio newspaper enterprise until 1920 and served as mayor of Viña del Mar.
During the First World War, Edwards travelled to England and enlisted as a private in the British Army. He participated in several battles and was later decorated by the British government for his wartime service. Because he had served in a foreign military without prior authorization, he lost his Chilean citizenship rights, which were restored in 1919.
Political career
A member of the National Party, Edwards was elected to the Chamber of Deputies for San Fernando for the 1906–1909 legislative term. During his tenure, he served on the Charity and Worship Committee.
Edwards died in Santiago on 15 July 1927.
