Quaff distillery
Quaff distillery was a primitive alcohol distillery founded on Pitcairn Island by the mutineers of the in the 18th century. The co-founder, Ned Young, along with William McCoy and Matthew Quintal, created a strong alcoholic drink from native fruits on the island.
Effects of the alcohol
Alcohol from the distillery was responsible for the suicide of William McCoy, who jumped off a cliff in a drunken frenzy. Matthew Quintal threatened to kill the community; however, he was killed by McCoy and John Adams in a drunken stupor.
Legacy
The Quaff distillery has a worldwide following thanks to the discovery of Pitcairn Island by American and British ships. As such, sailors from both countries who recognised the tenacity and innovation to create a still on a desert island continue the tradition of the Quaff Society in their honour.
