The Bentway
Waterfront Toronto hired Public Work to revitalize a 250 m long strip of the Gardiner Expressway. The Bentway stretches from Strachan Avenue to Bathurst Street, transforming the area under the Gardiner bridge to a pedestrian and cyclist path. The Bentway has a planned expansion of an additional 1.5 km to the already existing strip. In the winter the pedestrian path freezes over and creates a long skating path. The Bentway includes several splash pads, seating and gathering areas along its path. Murals are displayed along the path, reinvigorating what used to be a dark and desolate area. The project has been recognized several times having received the following awards: 2019 ASLA National Honour Award, 2019 CSLA National Award, 2019 AZ Award of Merit in Landscape Architecture & 'People's Choice' Award, 2018 AZ Award ‘Best Ideas/Prototypes
