Post emo

Post emo (often typeset as Post-emo) is a subgenre of Emo that originated in the 1990's with bands like The Promise Ring and The Get Up Kids. Bands of this style draw on indie rock influences. A number of groups of this style have been associated with the Midwestern emo scene. In the 2010's many new Post emo groups and artists began to spark interest in the genre in a movement known as the "[post] emo revival".

History and Characteristics

Post emo emerged during the 1990s. Unlike other Emo subgenres it takes influence from indie rock. Groups such as The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring, Saves the Day, Taking Back Sunday, and Brand New are considered to be important figures in the genre during the 1990s and 2000s. Nadeem Salaam describes it as a genre with "aggressive poly-rhythmic drums, epic/ambient guitars, lush instrumentation, complete with deeply personal musings of it’s respective vocalist". In the 2010s the term "post emo" has been used to describe a multitude of acts including Lil Peep and The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die.
