PopStar (I Can Be)

PopStar (I Can Be) is the official debut single by London artist Stine Richard. It is the first major release from the artist's upcoming studio album, Rising Artist following the two EPs 'Rock With You' and 'Ferrari'. The lyrics of the song send an encouraging message 'that you can be anything you want to be'. It was written by Stine at an abandoned gas station on Penrhyn road in Kingston-Upon-Thames early 2009.

Music video

A video for the song, directed by Nour Wazzi with cinematography by Balazs Bolygo, was filmed in London over two days on 15 and 16 August. Shot with the RED 35mm digital camera in stark high CONTRAST black and white, ‘PopStar’ connects the iconic hard-boiled yet sexy style of film noir gangster movies of the past with the modern day black and white chic. This style resonates in sequences of the artist being hoarded by photographers and in his unwelcomed presence in the mobster scenes. Its theme of being ‘anything you want to be’ is reflected in the artist getting the girl in the end and achieving his goal of becoming a PopStar, despite the obstacles from the gangsters.

Reception

The song was received by Midwest Radio and made it to 'Record of The Week' on September 26, 2009. The video for the song premiered on the display screens of House of Fraser, Oxford Street, London on 5 October, 2009.
