Pierre Venter

Pierre Venter is a South African-born microbiologist, food-safety scientist and university administrator who has served as vice-chancellor of Massey University in New Zealand since February 2026. Before joining Massey, he worked at Fonterra, where he became director of research and development at the company's Palmerston North research centre.

Education

Venter studied at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, where he completed a Bachelor of Science in biology, an honours degree in microbiology and a PhD in microbiology.

Career

Venter began his academic career at the Central University of Technology (South Africa), where he worked as a researcher and later became a professor.

He moved to Palmerston North, New Zealand, in 2011 to join Fonterra, where he held a number of scientific and research leadership positions at the company's Research and Development Centre. In 2019, Venter was appointed general manager of Innovation Services at Fonterra, and in 2023 became director of research and development. His work included food-safety and quality science, and in 2024 he received the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award at the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology Awards.

In October 2025, Venter was appointed the next vice-chancellor of Massey University, succeeding Jan Thomas. He took office on 2 February 2026 as the university's seventh vice-chancellor.

Recognition

In 2024, Venter received the Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award at the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology Awards. The award, supported by New Zealand Food Safety, recognised his contributions to food-safety and quality science in New Zealand and internationally.
