Philippe Gaillot (artist)
Philippe Gaillot born in Paris on May 26, 1956 is a jazz-fusion guitarist, pianist, singer and composer. He is also a producer and sound engineer.
Biography
Learning and beginings
At the age of seven Philippe enrolled in the Versailles Conservatory in piano class. Four years later he started classical guitar. During his sixteenth year, he left for Montreal where he completed his musical apprenticeship where he practiced music theory and choral singing at the and took guitar and organ lessons at Cours Galipeau Musique Inc.
Back in France he creates his own group; his influences are: Jimi Hendrix, Franck Zappa, Led Zeppelin, James Brown. He befriended guitarist Dominique Gaumont, his next door neighbor with whom he shared a large number of musical experiences, especially in New York when Dominique was guitarist in Miles Davis' group. During this stay he frequents musicians from the Black Artist Group such as Joe Bowie, Charles Bobo Shaw with whom he will perform.
It was also during this stay that he learned about sound techniques by working with professionals in the sector in New York.
Career
In 1976, back in France, this passion for the recording world led him to create his first recording studio "La Calade" in a village in the Gard. From then on, Philippe Gaillot pursued a dual career as a producer-sound engineer and composer-musician.
In 1981 Philippe created the Concept group which published his first record. The same year, he also created the "Big Fun", a jazz club located near Anduze in the Cévennes which will welcome many musicians such as Eddy Louiss or Sugar Blue.
At the end of 1984, he returned to New York where he rubbed shoulders with many musicians such as Jaco Pastorius, Darryl Jones, Mino Cinelu. He will then become the pupil of two other ex-guitarists of Miles Davis: Mike Stern and John Scofield.
On his return to France in 1985, with his group Concept which he co-lead with bassist Philippe Gareil, he released a second album of the same name which appeared on “52 ° Rue Est” and performed in numerous festivals such as the Nîmes International Jazz Festival, opening act for Ray Charles.
In 1988, Philippe released a first album on RDC Records under his name called Lady Stroyed. He then founded the “Lady Stroyed Band”, a group of ten musicians which would perform throughout Europe until the end of the 90s.
During the same period, he set up a twenty-four track mobile recording studio in a truck with which he recorded many Live artists including Carla Bley & Steve Swallow, Richie Cole, Michel Petrucciani Trio, Herbie Hancock 4tet, Chick Corea Electric Band, Chris McGregor, live at the but also Raoul Petite at Musikenstock in Nîmes.
In 1993, Philippe was called to direct the sound management of the Festival de St Louis du Sénégal. He will then work with Lucky Peterson and Randy Weston. There he met the Koriste Soriba Kouyaté, whose management he managed for several years. He will produce three Soriba albums released on the Act Music label and will arrange the first two: Kanakassi and Bamana.
In 1994, he created the residential recording studio Recall Studio that many artists have since come to visit, among them: Alain Bashung, Noir Désir, Césaria Evora, Stomy Bugsy, Corneille, Julien Doré, Gipsy Kings, Massilia Sound System, Pino Palladino, Jon Carin, Mike Stern, John McLaughlin, Shakti, Jacky Terrasson, Bireli Lagrène, etc.
In 1995, he released a new album on RDC Records under his name “Between you and me” in which he invited the oudist Nabil Ibn Khalidi and the saxophonists Bobby Rangell and Jorge Pardo.
In 1997, Mike Stern, his ex-guitar teacher, asked him to record songs that would later appear on the album Be Cool.
The following years will be mainly devoted to his activity as a sound engineer, producer and director / arranger. Within his studio or across the world.
In 2004, he will also leave to produce and record in Santiago de Cuba the album of singer Nora Mirsy LaVida.
In 2018, he released a new album Be Cool on the Ilona Records / L’Autre Distribution label.
In 2021, Philippe released the album Cassistanbul on his own label That Sound Records. In these last two albums, we find the musicians of his recent formations as well as many prestigious guests such as Mike Stern, Jacky Terrasson, Stéphane Belmondo, Irving Acao, Linley Marthe, Dominique Di Piazza, Olivier Ker Ourio, Pierre de Bethmann.
