Overflow (Wolverine and the X-Men episode)
"Overflow" is the fourth episode of the new animated series Wolverine and the X-Men. It was written by Greg Johnson and directed by Doug Murphy. In this episode, Professor X shows Wolverine a future vision of a destroyed Africa and reveals that Storm is the one who destroyed it. It is then revealed it won’t be long before the Shadow King tries to take control of Storm's body.
Plot
In an African desert, a peasant is seen dying of thirst, traveling. A generous passer-by stops to give him water but as he aids the dying man, the man awakens to show his eyes are a dark purple. He then grabs the man’s face and the energy is passed into the passer-by. The peasant faints and the passer-by leaves.
At the X-Mansion, Logan is awakened by Charles. As Logan enters the room where the Professor is and the doors are closing, Emma is seen following him. The Professor claims they are in a meeting of the minds. He proceeds to tell him that Africa in his time is completely destroyed and that it occurred twenty years before the future time. Logan realises that it will be soon. Professor X tells him that it was a catastrophe and that no one on the continent survived. Logan, confused, wonders what may have caused this and the Professor tells him it was Ororo who in the process took her own life. Professor tells Logan that he must find her before it is too late and then realized someone else is in the room. Emma is shown spying and Logan tells her to leave as the X-Men don’t need spies.
The next day Logan and Hank talk about the weather conditions in Africa. They discover that the event hasn’t happened yet and they need to find her. Hank then explains to Logan that they’ll need Cerebro and Emma and that she’ll want something in exchange to which Logan angrily repeats ‘’I know Hank’’ to each comment he makes. Emma and Logan talk about finding Storm to which they show they have trust issues. Eventually Logan agrees to trust Emma and she finds Storm.
Storm is the shown using her abilities to create rain and give water to an African village. Grateful, they have organized a celebration for her to which she exclaims ‘Another! We just had one.’ Kitty tries to get Scott to come help Storm and that she’s in danger but Bobby intervenes and they leave. They go to board the X-Jet which Forge has just finished repairing and he is terrified. While Logan is boarding he scratches the jet to calm Forge, saying that the first scratch is always the most painful. Scott then appears and to Logan’s surprise, he boards the jet.
Somewhere in Africa, close to the village, the parasite passes through body to body until it eventually reaches Storm and goes into her head. She begins to panic and everyone is told to go home. Inside her head, it is revealed that it is the Shadow King who has been coming to take revenge on Storm for destroying him. When Storm demands to know who it is and what they are after, he claims that he was like a father to her and a flashback of Storm’s previous life is shown. In the flashback, Storm is shown as a young girl who steals for the Shadow King’s human form. When he threatens to attack Storm, the Professor intervenes and defends Storm. When Storm remembers, she exclaims that he was destroyed to which he replies only his body, and that he has been travelling as the Shadow King. Storm asks the Shadow king what he wants and he tells her that he wants what happened to him to happen to her and he begins to burn Africa. Storm not wanting her home to be destroyed, summons rain and tells her friend to run from the fire and he tells her that there is no fire but she is too distracted to hear.
On their way, the X-Men realize that the event has begun and Logan speeds up. The dam in which the water for the village was being held breaks, and the village begins to flood. Arriving, the X-Jet speeds towards the location. When Storm looks at it, the jet seems to be a giant fire ball, so she CREATES a tornado which sends the jet flying into the dam. The jet sinks and Cyclops, Emma and Iceman manage to get out first. Kitty then phases Wolverine and Beast through the roof and they swim to the surface. Now watching what is occurring, Iceman creates a bridge for them to cross. Arriving closer to Storm, at the edge of the town, the Shadow King makes the fire seem worse. Storm panicking creates hail. Everyone manages to evade it using their powers but the winds are strong and a roof blows off hitting Iceman into Kitty who allows it to pass through. She runs after Iceman who has been thrown into the water but while helping an unconscious Iceman out, she too is knocked out by a piece of hail. Beast comes to their aid and Wolverine, Cyclops and Emma continue towards Storm.
Wolverine, using Cyclops’ optic blast to bring down Storm, is able to talk to her but it doesn’t work. Emma then goes into her mind and tells her the truth and realises that the Shadow King is who is behind this. He slaps Emma which knocks her out of Storms head. She goes back in only to be hit again. Storm now knowing the truth stops the rain and winds but is left weak. Logan realises that he is too powerful and begins to talk to her saying that is was all a lie. Wolverine states that Storm is too weak for him to use, so the Shadow King decides to take over Wolverine but Emma intervenes and a fight ensues. Keeping him out of a host body, Emma gets the upper hand and is able to defeat the Shadow King. Africa has been saved and the villagers are happy to see that their day of terror is over. Wolverine and Emma are seen having a moment in which it seems they are both beginning to trust each other, perhaps due to Emma nearly sacrificing herself to save Storm.
Storm and Wolverine are then seen watching the Professor and they speak about what the future will be like. Storm says that she is staying alongside her family (the X-Men) and that they must ensure when the Professor awakens, it is a world worth living in.
