Oscar Araripe
Oscar Araripe (b. July 1941) is a Brazilian artist, writer, educator, and social and ecological activist.
Early life
Araripe was born in Rio de Janeiro. His father was a doctor and his mother was a teacher. Later on his family moved to Ipanema. As a young man, Araripe was a bad student and rather laid-back until 1964, when Brazil experienced a coup.
1960s
Araripe joined student movements against the coup and had his political rights withdrawn. In 1966 and 1968, he traveled to America on a scholarship and attended seminars at Harvard. Later, he traveled to France. After returning to Brazil, his essay "A Brief Introductory Study of Personalism" earned him a scholarship to the Pro Deo University in Rome. While in Rome, he traveled across Europe and wrote for many different publications.
1970s and 1980s
In the 1970s, Araripe left journalism to focus on literature and published various books and articles. In 1984, he finished his book Eu Promeu, which was his first foray into painting. Four years later, his first exhibit was held at the Olivia Kann Gallery in Ipanema.
Today
Araripe has exhibited extensively, including at the Bank of Brazil's Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, the Republic Museum in Rio, the Mineiro Museum, in Belo Horizonte, and as part of the official presentations of ECO-92 UN World Conference, which was seen by an estimated 2 million people. His work has also been shown in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; The IV Biennale di Firenze, Italy; the Visual Arts League Exhibition at Lincoln Center, New York; and the Solange Rabello Gallery, Miami.
In 2006, he and his wife Cidinha Araripe, created the Oscar Araripe Foundation, and bought the house next to his studio, in Tiradentes, Brazil, where they will develop artistic-cultural exhibitions and other projects.
