The Boston Fire Department in the largest municipal fire department in New England and the largest in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The Boston Fire Department is organized in a paramilitary fashion, similar to that of most large municipal fire departments, namely the New York City Fire Department and the Chicago Fire Department.

Operations

The Office of Field Services, also known as Operations, is the largest division of the Boston Fire Department, and is commanded by the Deputy Chief of Operations. The Deputy Chief of Operations oversees the eight Deputy Division Chiefs assigned to the 1st and 2nd geographic Divisions within the Office of Operations, the 36 District Chiefs assigned to the nine geographical Districts within the these two Divisions, and the District Chief of Safety, as well as the District Chief assigned to Field Services.

The BFD currently operations 9 geographical firefighting Districts, divided into 2 Divisions. Each Division is commanded by a Deputy Chief per shift and each District is commanded by a District Chief, similar to a Battalion chief, per shift, who supervises approximately 3-5 Fire Stations and their respective fire companies within that District. The on-duty Safety District Chief serves as the Incident Safety Officer(I.S.O.) at fires and large-scale incidents. The on-duty Special Operations District Chief supervises the specialized companies and units at large-scale fire and rescue incidents. Each Deputy Chief and each District Chief is also assigned a Chief's Aide firefighter.

In 2013, the Boston Fire Department announced that, with the exception of H1, the Safety District Chief, all Special Operations "H" Units would be classified based on their function. For example, H6 will become Collapse Rescue 1, H7 will become Decon. 1, J20 will become the Dive Unit, etc.

Other Facilities

Boston Fire Headquarters is located at 115 Southampton St. in Roxbury and opened on August 6, 1951. Fire Headquarters also houses the Maintenance Facility/Motor Pool and the repair shop for the Fire Alarm Office.

The Boston Fire Department's Training Academy is located on Moon Island in Boston Harbor and opened on November 3, 1960.

The Marine Unit of the BFD is located at Burrough's Wharf in the North End and houses the 3 Fireboats or Marine Units. The Marine Unit responds to approximately 500−600 emergency calls annually.

The BFD's Fire Alarm Office(F.A.O.) is located at 59 Fenway in the Back Bay and opened on December 27, 1925. From 1895 to 1925, the Fire Alarm Office was located at 60 Bristol St. in the South End.

The Boston Fire Department also operates a High-Pressure Pumping Station at 175 Kneeland St. in Downtown and contains 17 miles of underground piping throughout the Downtown area. The system can provide pressurized water to the many pressurized fire hydrants in the Downtown area.

Closed/Disbanded Fire Companies

Below, is a listing of fire company locations in 1978, prior to the disbandment of many fire companies in the early 1980s. In 1978, the BFD operated 39 Firehouses organized into 13 Districts, or Battalions, in 2 Divisions. Many firehouses were closed and consolidated into newer and larger facilities, with multiple companies. The BFD operated with 44 Engine Companies, 29 Ladder Companies, 1 Aerial Tower Company, 2 Rescue Companies, and 2 Lighting Plant Units at the time.

Apparatus Specifications

The Boston Fire Department uses a variety of apparatus from a variety of manufacturers. As with other departments within the City of Boston, purchasing of fire apparatus and other equipment is conducted through a competitive bid process. Although the department has had a significant, long term relationship with E-One and to a lesser degree Pierce, the department has no official policy of purchasing from a specific manufacturer. All of Boston's frontline pumpers are equipped with a 1250 gallon per minute pump and a 500 or 750 gallon tank. Approximately a third of the pumpers are also equipped with foam capabilities. The engines currently in use are the Pierce Enforcer, E-One Cyclone II, and E-One Protector. Boston's frontline ladder companies consist of rear mount aerial ladders with lengths of 110 ft and 105 ft, mid mounted towers of 95 ft and a rear mounted tower of 85 ft. The city has two heavy rescue companies. Rescue 1 runs a 2007 Pierce Quantum and Rescue 2 recently took delivery of a 2009 KME Predator. In the summer of 2010, the department will take delivery of three KME pumpers and two E-One ladders. Chief's vehicles consist of Chevrolet Tahoes at the District Chief level and Chevrolet Suburbans at Deputy Chief. The commissioner and chief of department are both assigned Ford Crown Victorias.

Apparatus Safety

Questions have been raised about the safety of the apparatus on the Boston Fire Department. On January 9, 2009, Lieutenant Kevin Kelley, 52, was killed and 3 other firefighters were seriously injured when the apparatus they were riding on, Ladder 26, struck a building while returning to the station from a medical call. A braking malfunction has been cited as the culprit of the fatal accident. Ladder 26, accompanied by Engine 37, was stationed out of the Huntington Avenue fire station which has been said to be the busiest in Boston.

On January 11, 2009, only two days after the fatal accident, another apparatus malfunction occurred. Ladder 15 was en route to Boston Fire Headquarters to have maintenance work done when the turbo fuel injector malfunctioned, flooding the engine thus launching the truck into a parked vehicle. That day Ladder 15 was using a 19-year-old reserve apparatus out of the Boylston Street fire station. Its 2004 frontline piece was out for maintenance.

Both incidents raised questions about the safety of the fire department's apparatus. The Firefighters Union called upon the Massachusetts State Police Vehicle Inspection Unit to inspect all fire apparatus at the Boston Fire Department.
