Orchid Recovery Center for Women
The Orchid Recovery Center for Women is an addiction recovery center in Palm Springs, Florida.
History
In 2004 the Orchid Recovery Center for Women was founded in Palm Springs, Florida by Julie Queler. Queler had previously owned a women's halfway house, and opened Orchid with the help of investors including the Caron Foundation. It is a women's only center that serves women nationally in the US, and focuses on holistic treatment for those addicted to both alcohol and drugs, including prescription medications. The staff of Orchid are also exclusively women. The interiors of the original Center were designed by Norwegian artist Gay Bordal Kanuth based upon the Planetree model.
Treatment methods
James E. Lessenger and Glade F. Roper wrote that Orchid's, "model is unlike any other because it offers women an approach that is uniquely focused on the recovery needs of the female who suffers from the painful effects of [...] addiction, alcoholism, and unresolved trauma." The center blends traditional medical care with other methods including acupuncture, yoga, fitness, meditation, and art. Orchid also utilizes recent empirical research in order to adapt their program to current treatment options, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, family therapy, the 12 step recovery model, sublimation, and other alternative medicines. A large part of the program centers on "expressive therapies", including art therapy, healing sound therapy, meditation, psychodrama, breath work, and yoga.
Television appearances
On June 27, 2011 the Center was featured on the Intervention reality television series AbOUT confronting addicts, in the second episode of the show's eleventh season, centering on a young couple addicted to [...]. The Center was also featured by 20/20 in an April 2012 episode that followed four mothers trying to recover from alcoholism.
