Open Source Awards – UK
The UK Open Source Awards were first run in 2007 in Glasgow as the Scottish Open Source Awards. The Scottish Open Source Award event was delivered as a subset of the Scottish Software Awards.
Initially organised by SalesAgility, the awards, as the name implied, were aimed solely at Scottish companies and organisations engaged in or contributing to Open Source projects. The sponsors for the first awards were Sun Microsystems and the keynote speech was given by Simon Phipps (programmer).
The 2007 Award Winners were:
1. JPMorgan Chase Glasgow Development Centre for their work on Apache messaging standards for financial services.
2. Enterprise Management Consulting - An Isle of Lewis Linux consultancy for their consistent excellence in delivering and promoting Open Source excellence.
In 2008, the awards were again held in Glasgow under the auspices of the Scottish Software Awards. The keynote speech was given by Dan Shearer, a member of the Samba project.
The 2008 Award Winners were:
1. JISC- for AccessApps - over 50 Open Source and freeware Windows applications, running from a USB stick. Access Apps provides a range of solutions to support writing, reading and planning as well as sensory, cognitive and physical difficulties.
2. Wolfson Microelectronics - for their contributions to the Linux kernel.
In 2009, the Scottish Software Awards decided to discontinue their event and a decision was made to run The Scottish Open Source Awards as a solo venture. It was also decided to drop the word "Scottish" from the title and to aim to be an inclusive event for all UK based Open Source practitioners.
The 2009 Event is being held in the Informatics building of Edinburgh University in November 2009.
