:* The transportation officials of 17 Asian nations meet in Busan and sign the Trans-Asian Railway Network Agreement that authorizes the construction of a trans-Asian railway. Cosigners of the agreement include, in alphabetical order, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, the People's Republic of China, South Korea, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tajikstan, Thailand, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Twentyfour other nations also participated in the week-long conference.

:* - 27 people are killed when a Metrorail train traveling at Faure near Somerset West, just outside Cape Town, South Africa, collides with a truck that had stalled on a barrierless level crossing.
