North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center / UNC Hospitals

The North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, founded in 1981, is located at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. UNC Hospitals and Healthcare includes North Carolina Memorial Hospital, UNC Womens Hosptial, and UNC Childrens Hospital. Following an injury to a local electrician, an electrical contractor and business owner, Johnny Stackhouse came to realize there were significant limitations for the provision of critical burn care in North Carolina. Along with efforts from the North Carolina Jaycees, electrical co-ops, firefighters, and others, the dream for a state burn center at the (what was once known as the:) North Carolina Memorial Hospital became a reality.

Today, the burn center is one of less than 60 nationwide that are verified by the American Burn Association. It is one of less than 30 that are verified by the American Burn Association for the provision of care to a pediatric as well as an adult patient. Most recently, reverified for another three years, the Burn Center received official notification of successful reverification in October, 2009.

The centerpiece of burn care for the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center includes the 21 bed dedicated intensive care unit (renovated July 2008). Burn team consists of surgeons, nurses, social work, PT/ OT, nutrition, chaplain, recreation therapy, psychology, various other consultants and services.

As of 2009, the burn center is on track to surpass 1000 admissions for the year, making the burn center one of the busiest in the nation.
