Norbert Kristof
Norbert Kristof (also referred to as Kristóf Norbert) was born September 23, 1980 in Miskolc, Hungary, and is a singer, songwriter and guitarist. Norbert was the singer of the band Karatedog, and now he is working under the name of The Tree as a rock band too. He's got a unique and deep voice with a melancholic sense for "the end of the world", as a fan tried to describe: "some songs are like as if I were swimming... going on and on, gliding over the water. listening to it I feel there is no world outside, only the water, all around me. It is sad and i feel it is honest really. Like when at your show your eyes were closed all the time, as if you weren't present, and then sometimes i closed my eyes too, and i felt like that too, that i'm not there... I loved that. it's a bit like me, it's sad, but it lives... and I was listening to it on the bus, too, on the way home, because some songs are like when you have to take a step forward, have to go on... to be on the road without wanting to arrive.. you don't even know where - as there isn't much choice."
Musical style and influences
In the early years Norbert mostly listened to The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Radiohead and other grunge/alternative bands mostly from the USA. He wrote a song about a thank you to Billy Corgan titled Because Of You ("One day I'll stand on the platform, say that one guy rules and thats all") on the 2004 album. Later he discovered that there is a thing called "singer-songwriter" such as Elliott Smith, Damien Rice and Bright Eyes, so he started to play alone on stage from 2003. The latest years Norbert considered himself as an "emo-dark-geek" mostly listening to The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Used, Funeral For a Friend and new bands like Jeniferever and Radio Dept.
