Nilwala

Nilwala Entertainment (widely known as Nilwala Cassette King) is a prominent Sri Lankan music production and record label company. Established in the 1980s, the label played a pivotal role in shaping the Sri Lankan cassette and compact disc music industry, particularly during the golden era of cassette culture in the 1990s and 2000s, by producing hit albums for many leading local artists.

History and overview

Founded on 15 March 1984 by Upul Jayasinghe, Nilwala Entertainment is headquartered in Nugegoda, Colombo. During the 1990s and 2000s, the label became a powerhouse in the Sri Lankan music market, releasing albums that defined contemporary pop and melodic music. It collaborated extensively with legendary vocalists and backing bands such as Sunflower and Sakura Range.

Nilwala was instrumental in launching and sustaining the careers of prominent Sri Lankan artists such as Gunadasa Kapuge, Karunaratne Divulgane, Chandana Liyanarachchi, Asanga Priyantha Peiris, Namal Udugama, and Prince Udaya Priyantha.
