New Bark Town (Wakaba Town) is a fictional town in the Pokémon video games and animated television series. In both, it is referred to as "the town where the winds of a new beginning blow". It lies in the Johto region. It is based upon the city of Hamamatsu.
Video games
New Bark Town is the town in which players start their journeys in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. The player is a child who lives here with his or her mother, who will act like a bank if the player asks her to.
Players receive their first Pokémon in this town from the famous Professor Elm, also a resident. They have a choice between three Pokémon, which are Chikorita (Grass), Cyndaquil (Fire) and Totodile (Water). It is also where they see their rival for the first time.
To the west is Cherrygrove City, which can be reached via Route 29, home to Pidgey, Hoothoot, Rattata, Hoppip, Spearow and Sentret.
To the east is the vast Kanto region from Red, Blue, and Yellow, but this is not obvious when starting the game. One way to reach Kanto is by using a Pokémon to cross the lake immediately to the east of town.
Tohjo Falls
Tohjo Falls (Japanese: トージョのたき Tōjo no Taki) is a waterfall that separates Johto from Kanto. Located just east of New Bark Town, it is the final test of Pokémon trainers who have acquired all eight Johto badges and wish to put their skills to the test against the Elite Four.
Animated series
In the Pokémon anime, New Bark Town is the first town in Johto that Ash Ketchum visits (episode Don't Touch that 'Dile). In the anime, the Battle Pike is located near the Tohjo Falls.
Demographics
New Bark Town's population is about 10. This makes it the smallest town in Johto.
