Nayar (Khatri)

Nayar (also spelled Nayyar is a surname for some people from Punjab

They are mainly Khatris belonging to the Sareen sub-group. Some say they really are Nijjars (same as sikh jat)as said in village folklore and are a khatri subclan presently. The origin of the word is said to be in the Persian language and is said to mean the 'enlightened. In Arabic it translates to the Sun. The Jat-Khatri link remains unclear.
