The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology

AbOUT the National Register

The National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology (National Register) is the largest credentialing organization for psychologists, with ~12,000 currently credentialed doctoral level psychologists. Each National Register psychologist must meet stringent credentialing requirements, including an approved doctoral education, qualified internship and postdoctoral supervised experience, an ACTIVE unrestricted license to practice psychology, and no current or previous disciplinary actions taken against his/her license.

Establishment

The National Register was established in 1974 with the help of the American Psychological Association and the American Board of Professional Psychology. The National Register is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC.

Mission

The National Register mission is to promote credentialed psychologists to the public, provide distinction and value to its Registrants, guide psychology students toward credentialing, and enhance psychologists' contributions to integrated healthcare.

Consumers Outreach

The National Register promotes credentialed psychologists to the public through www.findapsychologist.org, a freely available database of ~12,000 credentialed psychologists. The website also contains a wide variety of reviewed articles and web resources for consumers, as well as frequently asked questions and answers about seeking help from a psychologist.

The National Register posts disciplinary actions against any Registrant on its website: www.nationalregister.org. Any action posted to the website is reviewed and approved by the National Register Committee on Professional Practice and Ethics (COPPE).

Benefits for Psychologists

The National Register expedites licensure mobility for its credentialed psychologists, offers free continuing education* through www.e-psychologist.org, increases referrals for psychologists through www.findapsychologist.org, verifies credentials to healthcare and insurance companies, sponsors awards and credentialing scholarshipsfor senior and early career psychologists, and GeneRally supports its credentialed psychologists.

The National Register participates in the Designation Project with the Association of State and Provincial Licensing Boards (ASPPB). The purpose of the ASPPB/National Register Designation Project is to review and identify qualified doctoral programs for psychologists and build consensus on standards among psychology educational institutions in the US, Canada, and the world. The ASPPB/National Register Designation Project also developed standards for postdoctoral programs in psychopharmacology.

  • The National Register is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The National Register maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Psychology Doctoral Student Outreach

Psychology doctoral students submit credentials for review and banking (storage) through the National Psychologist Trainee Register (NPTR). This program allows psychology doctoral students to begin their credentialing at an early stage in their career. For financially disadvantaged doctoral students, the National Register offers Student Credentialing Scholarships, which allows doctoral students to complete the NPTR and become credentialed upon initial licensure without paying any application and registration fees.
