Nathan Furniture Timeline

1916; Nathan founded by Barnett Nathan - a furniture maker of Russian origin. Barnett manufactured hand-crafted pieces of furniture in a workshop in Hackney, East London.

1918; At the end of the Cold War, Barnett was joined by his two younger bothers, Isaac and Myer. Over the next decade B&I Nathan, as the company was known, grew steadily.

1930; The business moves to a large, newly built building in Edmonton, North London.

1952; The second generation of the Nathan family came into the business. Barnett's eldest son Jerrold took control of sales.

1954; Nathan gains international recognition as the "Compton" dining suite was chosen to represent the Best of British design at a major exhibition in New York.

1955; Barnett's youngest son Clive comes into the business, in control of design and production. B&I Nathan began to change its products and specialise in cabinet manufacture.

1962; Nathan furniture floats on the London STOCK market.

1981; Nathan becomes a member of the Cornwell Parker Group (originally Parker Knoll). It employed 420 people, with an annual turnover of £6 million.

2000; Cornwell Parker is acquired by Silentnight a well reputed English bed-maker, for £23 million. Silentnight is attracted by the strength of Cornwell Parker's brands including Nathan and Ducal.

2005; Silentnight sell the Nathan name and designs to the Radford Furniture company, who re-ignite the brand.

2007 - Nathan Furniture is now available in 175 independent retailers throughout the UK.
