Muhammad Arif Butt
Muhammad Arif Butt () (born 3 November 1948) is the former vice-chancellor of the University of the Punjab in Lahore, Pakistan (2007-2008). He is a professor of chemical engineering and previously served as the dean of the faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology (2001-2008) and also as the director of Chemical Engineering and Technology (2002-2008) at the University of the Punjab. He has been involved in teaching various subjects at the Institute such as chemical reaction engineering, unit operations, transport phenomena, chemical plant design, heat and mass transfer both at graduate and post graduate levels. Although retired, he continues to work for university in assisting and mentoring faculty and students. He is a current member and the former president (2008-2010) of Pakistan Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE).
Education
Butt did his B.Sc. (1970) and M.Sc. (1971) in chemical engineering from University of the Punjab and later received his Ph.D (1978) in chemical engineering from Nagoya University in Nagoya, Japan. His thesis was entitled "Gas absorption with complex chemical reaction" and it was under supervision of Eizo Sada (co-supervisor Hidehiro Kumazawa).

During his time in office as the dean of the faculty of Chemical Engineering and Technology, he collaborated in establishment and development of following Institutions:

NTS Incident
Following the mandating of NTS testing in 2007, controversy arose with regards to admission to universities. It was later reversed by the government as there were issues pertaining to amendment of laws of universities. Six out of sixty-four departments at Punjab University were to choose for utilization of NTS testing. In October 2007, the Punjab University vice-chancellor, Muhammad Arif Butt, endorsed the use of NTS testing in all departments of the university.
