MSU Student Investment Association

The Michigan State University Student Investment Association(SIA) was established to educate students AbOUT investing and provide our members with the resources needed for the development of their investment knowledge for market and STOCK analysis. The intention is to learn how to invest in a straight forward and profitable manner. There are four main areas of focus: speakers, site visits, philanthropy, and the Analyst Program, which is the heart of the organization.

In the Analyst Program, members break into small teams and research a stock which meets our philosophy. They then prepare a presentation for the rest of the SIA. This teaches them not only about the stock market, but also how to present a pitch in a professional manner. After the presentation, the AP Board gathers to decide whether the SIA should go ahead and invest real money into the stock. Currently, the SIA holds shares in the following companies:

         -Target Corporation (TGT)
         -Conoco Phillips (COP)
         -Bank of America (BAC)
         -Altria Group (MO)
         -Kraft Foods Inc. (KTF)
         -Canon Inc. (CAJ)

Another big part of the Student Investment Association are the trips taken to some of the largest cities in the finance industry. In under two years of existence, trips have already been taken to Omaha, New York City, and Charlotte. A highlight of the trip to Omaha was a lunch meeting with famed investment guru Warren Buffet.

''The SIA was awarded the "Student Organization of the Year Achievement Award" in 2005, by the Michigan State University Department of Student Life. The award is presented to an organization who engages students in leadership, teamwork, scholarship, community involvement and active learning.

The SIA strives to improve upon that great honor in the upcoming years. For more information, contact President Patrick Burgess or Vice President of Marketing Mike Warakomski by e-mail at investor@msu.edu. Visit the official website by clicking on the link below.''
