Movember Malta
Movember Malta is the name of a fundraising activity held during the month of November, 2009 in Malta. It was organised in aid of the Equal Partners Foundation of Malta, a charity organisation celebrating its 10th birthday in 2009. The word "Movember" is a mix of the words 'Moustache' and 'November'. Over the period of more than one month, its male participants were asked to grow a moustache and to follow the Movember manifesto, a set of rules which include:
- shaving of the whole face on October, 31st
- no shaving of the upper lip region of the face
- This part must remain clean shaven for the entire 30 days
Cause
The aim is to support the Equal Partners Foundation1, a Maltese parent-run foundation to help people, especially children, with disabilities. In order to raise money, voluntary donations by private persons and companies were collected. Furthermore, a voluntary entrance fee of EUR 1-2 was lifted from persons participating in the series of Movember events.
Events
A series of five happenings in total was held to stimulate the cause of Movember- to raise money for the Equal Partners Foundation. From November, 6th until December, 4th Sliema's Mojito Bar was the "official Movember bar" and the venue were the participants gathered. A special feature were the ever-changing motifs, which gave the Movember nights an interesting, enjoyful touch.
While the first event was carried out as a disco-type music party with emphasis on 60s garage, rhythm n blues and 2 tone records, the second event, named "The Unlucky Band Night in the MOon Light" actually featured three live bands: "BEN & PHIL", "FOR STRINGS INN", and "DOLLS FOR IDOLS". For the third event, the Maltese bellydancing group "Tribal dance Malta" was invited to perform sessions accompanied by the Movember DJs. The fourth event, in accordance with the steady growth of moustaches of the participants, demanded a Mexican outfit to celebrate a "Mexican Night". Eventually2, the best moustache was awarded during the fifth event, closing the month-long fundraising activities.
