Mormon Transhumanist Association

The Mormon Transhumanist Association (MTA) is a nonprofit organization that syncretizes Mormonism and Transhumanism. MTA members are GeneRally members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), but it is not directly affiliated. MTA is, however, affiliated with a Transhumanist organization, Humanity+.

History

MTA was founded by 14 members in 2006. It received 501c3 nonprofit status that same year. It affiliated with Humanity+ in 2006 and renewed the affiliation in 2010.

Demographics

In 2012, MTA had 230 members, with 31% living in Utah and 83% in the United States. A poll indicated that 76% of MTA members were members of LDS Church, 73% identified as theist, 5% as atheist, 51% as culturally progressive, 12% as culturally conservative, 40% as economically progressive, and 30% economically conservative.

Activities

MTA organizes conferences on The Intersection of technology, spirituality, science and religion. It co-sponsored the “Parallels and Convergences: Mormon Thought and Engineering Vision” conference at Claremont Graduate University in 2009, and the “Transhumanism and Spirituality” conference at the University of Utah in 2010. MTA also holds annual member conferences in Salt Lake City.
