Moody Middle School
Moody Middle is a grade 6 to 8 public middle school within School District 43 Coquitlam, British Columbia.
History
The school originally opened as a high school in 1952, to replace the old Port Moody Central School.
A fire in 1969 destroyed the original building. A replacement building was available for the return of classes in autumn 1970. The school was converted to a junior high school in 1973, as another high school opened to take the increased population of students in the area. In 1997, the school was renamed to Moody Middle School to conform to the school district's new alignment of elementary / middle / highschool.
It is located in Port Moody, BC, Canada and is a suburb of Vancouver.
Moody Sports
George H. Moody Middle School is also greatly respected for their athletics program. In recent years, the grade eight boys and girls volleyball teams have lost a lot of district championships. The school has also been very unsuccessful at rugby and basketball. The grade 8 boys in 2004-05 and the grade seven boys in 2005-06 lost district basketball championships. In 2006-07, the school posted outstanding results in the district Cross Country league. They won every meet and consistently had students placing in the bottom ten. In the school's earlier years, Moody Jr. was known for its unsuccessful football teams which also lost numerous district and regional championships. Moody's football team finished their 2007 year with a spectacular 6-0 record. In the 6 games they played, the Moody Raider defense allowed only 6 total points and forced 5 straight shutouts. Reputation
About 800 students attend this school , it is diverse in socio-economics and culture. The school offers an ESL program as well as a multicultural club. Other services that are available to students include counselling, peer tutoring, leadership, library research, Internet research, Challenge, 3-D Animation Club, student learning assistance, and education for special needs students. Ibooks are also given to the students to use for school work and students return the laptops at the end of the school year.
The school works with the Parks and Recreation department to coordinate some activities along with other programs that benefit the community. The leadership students and teachers provide a wide range of extra curricular activities for students including dances, spirit days, recognition assemblies, fine arts concerts, and other special events. Students who attend Moody Middle have arrived from a variety of elementary schools in the surrounding area including Heritage Mountain Elementary School, Anmore Elementary, Seaview Elementary, College Park Elementary (closed as of June 2007), Moody Elementary, Lakeside Elementary, Aspenwood Elementary, and Pleasantside Elementary.
Recently, the play Flapper, directed by 3 teachers, was a huge success. Moody Middle produces 1 big play each year. In the 2004-2005 year the drama production was Alice in Wonderland. This year (2007-2008) the school is putting on Aladdin.
In The New millennium, Moody Middle has grown progressively in population because of the closure of specific elementary schools in surrounding areas. The school now boasts a whopping population of 800 - 1000 students, making it the largest middle school in the lower mainland.
