History

Midland box truck in Halifax, Nova Scotia Midland Transport began operations in 1970 following the acquisition of a small regional trucking firm in the Annapolis Valley. The company initially employed fewer than ten people and served short-haul routes within the Maritime provinces.

During the late 20th century, Midland expanded as industries in Atlantic Canada—including forestry, manufacturing, and the seafood sector—generated increased demand for regional freight transportation. The company developed scheduled less-than-truckload (LTL) services and invested in terminal infrastructure to support higher freight volumes and faster transit times.

In 1987, Midland launched Midland Courier, a dedicated parcel and courier division serving Atlantic Canada and central Canada.

By the 2010s, Midland had grown into one of the larger trucking fleets in Canada, operating hundreds of trucks and more than a thousand trailers, in addition to several hundred owner-operators. The company reported handling over four million shipments and approximately three billion pounds of freight annually across its network.

In 2016, J.D. Irving, Limited announced the construction of a new Midland transportation terminal at Yarmouth Airport to support regional manufacturing and seafood export industries.

In 2019, Midland Transport employees in Montreal ratified a new collective agreement that included wage increases and improved working conditions, reflecting broader labour pressures within the Canadian trucking industry.

In 2024, Midland opened a 92-door transportation terminal in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

As of the mid-2020s, Midland employs more than 2,300 people and operates a nationwide network of terminals and transportation equipment across Canada.
