Early life
Michael Waters, born Michael Jerome Waters, was born in New Jersey on August 17, 1950. He had six other siblings, five younger than him. He grew up in a Cape house until he was eight, and then moved to a larger house. His youngest brother was born with down syndrome, and when he was fifteen his nine year old sister died of leukemia. He was raised Catholic, and after he went to a Catholic high school he went to Hamilton College in New York, which at that time was 90% men.
Car Accident
At the end of his freshman year in Hamilton, when he was nineteen, Michael was involved in a car accident. After his gym teacher had a heart attack, Michael and a few of his friends went out. Coming back, they hitchhiked with a man who was under the influence of alchohol. The car was old and had no seatbelts. The driver swerved and ran into a telephone pole. Michael, who was in the passenger seat, was thrown out of the car and flew AbOUT 100 feet before landing in a sitting position, breaking his back and partly severing his spinal cord. He was taken to the hospital and stayed there for a year recovering. One of his feet was almost completely paralyzed, and both of his legs were slightly paralyzed as well. Since he was out of college for a year, he had to join a different class.
