Michael Mitchell is a Canadian musician specializing in patriotic and children's songs. His "Canada Is For Kids" concert program is regarded at the most 'in-demand' show in elementary schools nationwide. He performs songs of our Canadian heritage and brings to life what it really means to be a Canadian. More than 4,000 elementary schools and communities have hosted this entertainer, an average of 250-300 performances each year. Michael Mitchell is a former songwriter and recording artist for Sesame Street and co-host of CTV's Storytime and performed the soundtrack for the PBS special Buried in Ice—The Franklin Expedition. He has six independently produced CDs: Canada Is For Kids - Volume 1 , 2 and 3. Volume 2 was nominated for the 2002 West Coast Music Awards in the best children’s music category as well as an Independent Music Award (Indie). Volume 3 was awarded a Star Selection for being a product of 'exceptional calibre' by the Canadian Children's Book Centre (CCBC) and was also nominated for an ‘Indie’ award. His other CDs are entitled Lest We Forget, Canada Is..., and Pub Night Volume 1. Michael’s O Canada Interactive CD-ROM and 4-disk Electronic Teaching Kit were recently released and incorporate dozens of teaching resources for schools and home schoolers. Michael tours about 200 days each year, has donated more than $200,000 to schools across Canada through his product sales school rebate program, and has a music distribution deal for his recordings with Warner Music. He has spent 24 years as an Infantry Officer with (The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada) of Canada and has also been a military intelligence officer and paratrooper. He is also the author of a definitive military history book entitled Ducimus—The Regiments of the Canadian Infantry. In recognition of many years of outstanding military achievement, the Governor General of Canada invested Major Michael Mitchell (ret’d) as an Officer of the Order Military Merit in May 1993. In the Canadian Honours system, this award ranks one level higher than that of Member of the Order of Canada.
