Manchester University Music Society

Manchester University Music Society (MUMS) is the official music-making society for the University of Manchester. The society is part of the University of Manchester Students' Union, and works closely with the Music Department of the University. Although primarily focussed on classical music, the society also fosters other genres of music, in particular jazz. The society performs regular public concerts in term time, and in the last week of the year (usually the first or second week of June) hosts its annual 4-day festival called Estival. The majority of the societies concerts are held in 320-seat Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall in The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama at the university.
In 2008/9 the society had over 400 members, half of whom were studying music at the university. Student membership is open to any student in Manchester, and non-student membership is open to everyone. Although membership is publicly available, performance priority is given to student of University of Manchester, and so the majority of membership is from undergraduates at the university.

Estival
Formed in 1978, Estival was originally establisbed by Professor Basil Deane and several talented postgraduate students (including the university's current Professor David Fanning). Meaning ‘appearing in summer’, Estival is the University of Manchester Music Society’s annual post-exam festival featuring hundreds of musicians in 12 concerts over 4 days making it the biggest student led classical music festival in the city.
Summer Musical
In 2007 a joint venture between MUMS and the University of Manchester Drama Society was set-up in which they would support society members to put on a musical in the month of May. In 2007 this was Sunday in the Park with George by Stephen Sondheim, 2008 was the same composer's Company and 2009 saw a hugely successful production of My Fair Lady at the Zion Arts Centre, Hulme.
Committee
Every year after the Annual General Meeting a new committee is elected by the Music Society members. Elected positions include President, Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Officer, Social Secretary and General Member. It is a tradition that the new committee comes into power after midnight at the Music Society Summer Ball, usually held at a hotel in Manchester.
