Makuta (Phantoka)
In Lego's Bionicle storyline, a sect of the Brotherhood of Makuta has invaded Karda Nui, the core of the Bionicle universe, at the close of the Legends story arc. Opposed by the Toa Nuva, the Makuta have split into two teams in order to pursue multiple goals: the "Phantoka", or "spirits of the air", are waging war in the sky; while the others are in the swamp and have a yet-unknown label.
Fictional character history
The details of the Makutas' goals are yet unknown, though Karda Nui's status as the core of the universe is certainly a factor. Karda Nui is also the last known location of the extremely powerful Ignika Mask of Life, which the Brotherhood would undoubtedly want to control.
As part of the invasion, some of the Makuta have used Shadow Leeches to corrupt the local Matoran of light, turning them into Shadow Matoran allies.
Powers
The Makuta exist as masses of energy that merely inhabit and animate unliving armor (see "Powers" section in the article for the Brotherhood's leader for details). If this armor breaks, then this energy will leak out and begin to dissipate unless it can contain itself, either in some enclosure or in a robotic or otherwise soulless shell.

- The Makuta can create Kraata from their essences, which can then be transformed into Rahkshi armor that a second Kraata can control. A Kraata can wield one of the forty-two powers.
- All Makuta wear Kanohi Masks, and weaken when they are removed.
In addition to the powers shared by all Makuta, the invaders of Karda Nui use Shadow Leeches, altered Kraata that can corrupt others into shadow beings. The Makuta can also team up and create a link with a Shadow Matoran partner, unlocking a special power in the Matoran and providing other advantages to the Makuta.

Phantoka
Three Makuta have taken bat-like forms and are referred to as "Phantoka" because of their flight abilities. They have been permanently blinded by Toa Matoro's use of the Mask of Life and have each teamed up with a Matoran partner in order to see:
Antroz
Antroz, the leader of the invasion force, is an accomplished warrior. He never underestimates his enemies and actually prefers a fair fight rather than cheating. In addition to claws and poisonous fangs, he wears a Jutlin Mask of Corruption that can make inanimate objects rot and break down. Another weapon he has is a Tridax Pod which holds four dangerous shadow leeches. He is partnered with Radiak, who can make enemies slow and lazy.
Vamprah
Vamprah is a silent hunter, and therefore chooses to be mute. He loves to slowly track and kill his foes. Vamprah is even feared by other Brotherhood members. He is armed with hook claws and razor-sharp wing knives, and he can literally feed on the hopes and feelings of others. Another weapon he has is a Tridax Pod carrying four shadow leaches. He wears an Avsa Mask of Hunger, which drains (at his choice) light, energy or positive emotions from a target at a distance. His preference is always the latter, but he will drain energy if he's in combat. He is partnered with Gavla who can send enemies off balance and cause vertigo.
Chirox
Chirox is, along with Mutran, one of the Brotherhood's experts in the field of mutation. Always tinkering with his monstrous experiments; he often belittles Mutran's creations as too stupid and not having enough teeth. He usually spends his time making mutants out of the Karda Nui beasts. When in battle, he tends to fight dirty. His mask is a Shelek Mask of Silence that can temporarily make an opponent mute and deaf. He also wields blade hooks and a Tridax Pod that carries four shadow leaches. His Matoran partner Kirop can make opponents blind, as well.
Swamp Team
Three Makuta will be working in the swamp, and for some reason do not have access to their full range of powers. They are Krika, Gorast, and Bitil. One of these three is female.
Icarax
Icarax is the Makuta of Karzahni, and he feels that the Brotherhood's plans are far too complex, preferring to just destroy his enemies rather than manipulate. Since the defeat of the Makuta of Metru Nui, Icarax has claimed that "the Brotherhood was his now". Now wearing the Mask of Shadows, he stole the Staff of Artakha and planned to conquer Karzahni. The Toa Nuva, also desiring the staff, pursued Icarax to Karzahni; but were defeated and lost his trail. He made his way to Mahri Nui, where he delivered the staff to the Makuta of Metru Nui before departing. Afterwards, he apparently joined the Brotherhood's campaign on Karda Nui.
Mutran and Vican
Mutran, like Chirox, is an expert in mutation and transformation (in fact, his name is based on those words). He wields claws, fangs, blades, armored wings, and a long spear. He also carries a Tridax Pod with shadow leeches. Though not blinded, Mutran has a Shadow Matoran (formerly Le-Matoran) partner, Vican, as a lab assistant. They also both guard the shadow leech vats.
