The M1 Derby is a derby in the A-League that involves Queensland's Brisbane Roar and Gold Coast United of the Hyundai A-League. They are considered to be a fierce rival in the A-League due to being two of the closest teams geographically. , It is named the M1 Derby, with reference to the M1 motorway that links the two cities. However it is also known in the media as the 'South East Derby' after commentators and fans first referred to it.

The rivalry between the two clubs started when Gold Coast United was first announced as a future A-League team in 2008, it became even more evident when Miron Bleiberg, a former manager of the Brisbane Roar, was named as the Gold Coast's inaugural coach.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley had initially discussed with both Gold Coast and Brisbane Roar regarding the location of the first encounter, however when the draw was released the decision had been made to play the game at Suncorp Stadium. Gold Coast coach Miron Bleiberg and owner Clive Palmer were unimpressed at an opening day away trip . In the lead-up to the fixture Palmer announced that he would boycott the game in protest and urged Gold Coast supporters to join him in not attending, however he later backed down. Bleiberg joined his boss in boycotting a pre-game press conference in which the FFA allowed the Roar to replace Bleiberg with a cardboard cutout .

During the first encounter there were 10 yellow cards given out in a victory for Gold Coast. The tension in the match showed on the pitch with a melee near full time between New Zealand international Shane Smeltz and Roar's Scottish hard-man Bob Malcolm in which almost every player on the pitch got involved..
