Lumiere Magazine

Lumière was the first online fashion magazine.

Originally launched in Paris on October 10, 1995, it was the first internet fashion title to receive official recognition by the august Chambre Syndicale du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode, the industry's regulating body.

The first website to use an all-black screen background, TIME magazine noted, "Lumière, which dresses in black, gives haughtier attitude and appears to enjoy the best access to fashion’s most haute echelons."

2012 relaunch

With its relaunch on September 10, 2012, edited and creative directed by Stephen Todd, the founding editor in 1995, the new-look Lumière is the culmination of Todd's editorial credentials: from Dutch, to Numéro, to Jalouse to V Magazine.

History

Lumière was founded by internet pioneer Stig Harder in 1995, the same year he launched fashion.net, the world’s first fashion site. Stig Harder is a member of the prestigious International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (the Academy’s list of luminaries includes Larry Ellison, Tina Brown, Peter Guber, Richard Branson and David Bowie). Like Fashion Net, Lumière helped establish a new media platform for fashion publishing and was frequently mentioned in the media, including Vogue, ELLE, The Guardian, The New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly.

In its early years, Lumière was at the frontier and front-row, gaining access to industry leaders such as Helmut Lang, Ann Demeulemeester, Jil Sander and YSL founding partner, Pierre Bergé – all of whom participated in fashion online for the first time via Lumière.

Publisher

Lumière is a Lumiere Inc publication.

Awards and Distinctions

Lumière was nominated for a Webby Award in 1999 and again in 2002.

Lumière was included in an exhibition called "Mixing Messages: Graphic Design in Contemporary Culture" at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum between September 17, 1996 and February 16, 1997.
