Low Academic Performance/No Sports

NC S377 was a bill submitted to the General Assembly by a North Carolina State Senator on March 3rd, 2009. The bill titled "Low Academic Performance/No Sports" would eliminate interscholastic athletics at public schools in the state that score below the 50th percentile for end of year tests two years in a row.

Sen. Charlie Albertson, D-Duplin, said that he does not want to punish students who are doing well, he, however, does want to encourage students who are not performing well in the classroom to do better. He said, "we certainly want our kids to keep playing sports because we know how important that is, but we need to remember the first thing AbOUT a school is to be able to learn and read and write and do math."

Test score from the past two years suggest that if passed, there are 10 schools in the Raleigh/Durham/Fayetteville area alone that would be effected immediately by this legislation.

The Bill was filed in the State Senate on March 3rd, 2009 and referred to the committee on Education/Higher Education on March 4th, 2009.
