London 2012 Inspire Programme
London 2012 Inspire Programme
The London 2012 Inspire programme is the mass participation programme of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It recognises the legacy of the Games beyond bricks and mortar.
History
When London 2012 bid leader Seb Coe addressed International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Singapore in 2005, he promised a Games not just for London but for the UK, a Games that would inspire young people and change the face of British sport.
On 6 July 2005, after a maximum four rounds of voting by members, IOC president Jacques Rogge announced that, "The International Olympic Committee has the honour of announcing the games of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 are awarded to the city of London."
Launch
In September 2008, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) launched the London 2012 Inspire programme alongside its celebratory Open Weekend, marking the start of the Cultural Olympiad, putting culture back at the heart of the Games.
Sport and beyond
The Inspire programme recognises projects in six broad strands: sport, culture, volunteering, sustainability, education and business opportunities. It is open to non-commercial organisations delivering projects that harness the inspiration of the 2012 Games to drive participation.
