List of past Emmerdale characters (1972–1999)

The following is a list of past characters that first appeared in the British soap opera Emmerdale from 1972 to 1999. From 1972 to 1989, it was known as Emmerdale Farm.

Elsa Chappell

Elsa Chappell (née Feldmann), played by two actresses, Naomi Lewis from 1990–1991 and again in 1993 and 1994 and Natasha Gray in 1999 and 2001, arrived in Beckindale in 1990 with her mother and brother and soon caught the eye of Nick Bates. A year later they decided to get married and Elsa discovered she was pregnant and in February 1991 she gave birth to Alice but in December that year broke down and left Alice with Nick and left Beckindale.

Elsa returned several times after her exit the first was after the plane crash in January 1994 for her mother's funeral when she tried to get Alice back and spread rumours that Nick and Archie were Gay. Then in May the same year after the hostage situation at Home Farm which cost the life of Shirley Turner she tried to get Alice again but failed. She was never seen again until 1999 after Nick had been locked up for [...] and Kathy Glover (Nick's sister) took in Alice and tried to gain custody over Kathy and won. Her final return was in 2001 when she came to Emmerdale after Kathy kidnapped Alice. Then Alice and Kathy returned to Australia with her.

Pete Collins

Pete Collins, played by Kirk Smith, is known in the village as the lorry driver that crashed into the bus containing Emmerdale residents on the village's main street in 2000. The accident is well known as it caused Butch Dingle severe injuries and he later died in hospital. Pete also died in the accident.

Butch Dingle

Francis "Butch" Dingle,played by Paul Loughran, dies in hospital of his injuries caused by a bus crash on 24 March 2000. Before dying Butch marries Emily Kirk on his death bed. The crash happened little over a year since the departure of the Tate Matriach, Kim Tate. Butch was buried next to his brother Ben who died nearly six years earlier. The epitaph on their tombstone is 'Dead but still Dingles'. {{-}}

Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes, played by Craig McKay, died in the 1993 plane crash that devastated the village.

His stepfather Joe Sugden wanted him to return a vacuum cleaner that evening which had been borrowed from Lynn Whiteley and this resulted in Mark being in the wrong place at the wrong time when a large section of the Eastern European airliner came down on Whiteley's farm.

Jackie Merrick

John Jacob "Jackie" Merrick was played by Ian Sharrock from 1980 to 1989. The character was originally seen as a silent young boy (actor unknown) in the earliest episodes of Emmerdale Farm before becoming a fully-fledged regular character in September 1980. He was the son of Pat Merrick (originally Ruth), a former lover of Jack Sugden.

In 1985, Jackie almost died after being run over by Alan Turner while fixing his motorbike. During his slow recovery after waking from a coma, he finally acknowledged Jack, with whom he'd been feuding prior to the accident, as his father by referring to him as "Dad".

Jackie married Kathy Bates in 1988 but the marriage didn't last very long as Jackie was killed the following year, in an accident while he and Seth Armstrong were hunting for a £10 bet. Jackie tried to take a shotgun out of his car, but it got caught and went off by mistake, [...] him in the process.

Jessica McAllister

Jessica McAllister is a fictional character in Emmerdale between 1993 and 1995. She join with her family im mid 1993 and later started dating Biff Fowler. {{-}}

Elizabeth Pollard

Elizabeth Pollard (née Jeffries, previously Feldmann) , played by Kate Dove, was killed in the 1993 plane crash that hit the village although some characters believe that her husband Eric actually murdered her as she was on the way to report his latest fraud to the police when the disaster struck. {{-}}

Marian Rosetti

Marian Rosetti (née Wilks) was first played by Gail Harrison from 1972 to 1976, then by Debbie Blythe for two stints in 1987 and 1988.

Francesca Rosetti

Francesxa Rosseti played by Natasha Dilleyston in 1987, her character returned to Italy due to her Father being shot.
