  • Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), which oversee all NHS operations in an area.
  • Special Health Authorities which provide services across England, including:
    • National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
    • NHS Direct, Providing a national service to the public
    • NHS Business Services Authority managing the NHS Pension Scheme
    • NHS Professionals Special Health Authority

Direct healthcare providers

  • NHS Trusts, comprising:

    • NHS Hospital Trusts. 290 organisations administer hospitals, treatment centres and specialist care in AbOUT 1,600 NHS hospitals (many trusts maintain between 2 and 8 different hospital sites).
