The original IKEA store was opened in Sweden in 1958. The first stores outside Sweden were opened in Norway (1963) and Denmark (1969). In the 1970s, stores spread to other parts of Europe, with the first store outside Scandinavia opening in Switzerland (1973), followed by Germany (1974). During the same decade, stores were opened in other parts of the world, including Japan, (1974), Australia and Hong Kong (1975), Canada (1976) and Singapore (1978). Germany, with 43 stores, is IKEA's biggest market, followed by the United States, with 35. IKEA now has 285 stores in 36 countries. However, the company has thus far not shown much of a presence in the developing countries.

Stores currently under development are Tampa in Florida and North Carolina's first store in Charlotte; the latest store opening as of August 2008 was IKEA's first store in New York City, namely in Brooklyn. On September 10, 2008, it was announced that IKEA would be opening a store in Centennial, Colorado.

IKEA Leeds is in West Yorkshire In November 2007 a planning application was approved for an 18th store in Southampton, which opened on 12 February 2009. IKEA are also reported to be looking for a location in South Yorkshire.

Its features will include a 40,000-sq-m Ikea store, a department store, branded fashion outlets, restaurants, an IT centre, an entertainment centre and parking for 8,000 cars. Mr Huzell said Ikano plans to open two more Ikea stores in Thailand.

There are 3 IKEA stores in Moscow (Khimki, Teply Stan and Belaya Dacha), 2 stores in St. Petersburg (Parnas and Dybenko), stores in Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don and Novaya Adygea (in Adygea near Krasnodar). There are also 11 MEGA malls developed by IKEA (3 in Moscow, 2 in St. Petersburg, in Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don and Novaya Adygea). IKEA stores and MEGA malls in Samara, Omsk, Ufa are under construction now.

The first IKEA store in the Republic of Ireland, and the second on the island of Ireland, was intended to be opened in 2007 but due to conditions imposed by the local authority, its construction was severely delayed. On 2007-06-13 the Irish Planning Board, An Bord Pleanála, finally gave the go ahead for the store.. Although development of the store has commenced, conditions imposed by the Planning Board could force the completed store to remain closed until 2010. IKEA then opened their ROI homepage with a more ambitious opening date of 2009. and have since stated the store will be finished in February 2009, enabling them to open as soon as conditions allow them to do so. The IKEA Ireland site now states that the store is opening on the 27th July 2009.
