ShortSummary=Xiaodong eagerly offers a stranger some help, but she makes a fool out of herself because of language barrier. Her friend Haojie bails her out. Xiaodong likes Haojie, to which Haojie’s mother Aunty Chen is supportive of. Someone peep on Xiaodong when she is changing, and her friend Ding Xie nabs Noguchi. Xiaodong let Noguchi go because she believes he is innocent.

Xiaodong picks up a photograph of Jianye from the street. Jianye misunderstands she took it from his tin box without permission, but later discovers he wronged her…

Haojie has difficulty getting a job since his graduation from university, and his girlfriend Simin is unhappy he helps out at the lingerie shop. Simin advises Haojie to venture overseas. As Aunty Chen disapproves, Haojie feels torn.

Xiaodong runs into Noguchi. While chatting, Xiaodong shares her past with Noguchi openly. Xiaodong takes Noguchi to Ding Xie’s shop as he needs a new pair of shoes, but Ding Xie slips a thumbtack into the shoes and Noguchi gets hurt. Noguchi grabs onto Xiaodong in pain.

Ding Xie accuses Noguchi of molesting Xiaodong, so the neighbours run after Noguchi. When Noguchi sees Jianye, he calls Jianye “Grandpa” suddenly…

ShortSummary=Before Jianye gets on the ambulance, he thinks of the time when the family portrait is taken. He tells Xiaodong and Noguchi he wishes to meet his three children before dying, but Xiaodong fails to ask for their names.

Xiaodong is taken by surprise, for Jianye always refuse to discuss his family with her.

Noguchi informs his stepfather that Jianye has a stroke, but Jinxing urges Noguchi to return home instead.

Xiaodong fails to find any lead about Jianye’s children in his room. When she consults Grandpa Johnny, he reveals Jianye used to live in a big house in Katong.

Xiaodong and Noguchi bump into Shuixing in Katong, but they miss the chance to discover she is Jianye’s daughter. After a long search, Xiaodong learns from one of Jianye’s old neighbour that Shuixing used to work in a massage parlour.

Xiaodong and Noguchi get caught for poking their noses in the massage parlour. Fortunately, Xiaodong manages to get an address from a masseuse.

Xiaodong and Noguchi meet Mary, who claims she is Shuixing. Xiaodong believes Mary, but Noguchi has his suspicions.

Xiaodong wants Mary to visit Jianye, but Mary refuses. Mary cooks up some story about how Jianye caused the death of her lover because he wants Mary to marry a rich man. Xiaodong pities Mary, so Mary asks Xiaodong to help pay for her daughter’s education.

Chenglong helps a bookie collect gambling bets from his friends, but he hides it from his mother Mei-e. Muxing’s business partner hounds Mei-e for money, so Mei-e asks for more time.

Chenglong is upset Muxing scares his female friend away. He complains to Mei-e and she reprimands Muxing.

Shuixing warns Mary not to cheat Xiaodong’s money. When Noguchi cautions Xiaodong that Mary may be a cheat, Xiaodong quarrels with him.

ShortSummary=The friends in Chinatown help Xiaodong raise money, but Mary runs away after accepting it. Noguchi and Shuixing help to stop and expose Mary, but Xiaodong is more concerned that Jianye will be disappointed.

On seeing Jianye scolds Xiaodong for failing to bring Shuixing to him, Shuixing changes her mind about visiting him. Shuixing hides her identity from Xiaodong and Noguchi, but she expresses concern about Jianye’s condition.

Nako arrives in Singapore to take Noguchi back, for she has arranged a matchmaking session for him. Noguchi refuses, and he insists on helping Jinxing reunite with Jianye.

To make Haojie stay, Aunty Chen asks Xiaodong to seduce Haojie. Xiaodong makes Haojie believe they slept together, and Aunty Chen blows the matter up to coerce Haojie into taking responsibility of Xiaodong. Xiaodong wants to come clean, but Aunty Chen convinces her not to.

As Jianye has always been healthy, his sudden illness causes him to be easily agitated. He claims he wants to break his ties with Xiaodong and chases her out…

After Shuixing massages for “Bread Crust”, he claims Shuixing molested him and refuses to pay. Shuixing and Coco grab $50 from his wallet before driving him out.

When Shuixing is with Alex, she overhears “Bread Crust” carrying tales about her. She confronts the guy in anger and Mei-e offers help, yet Shuixing is not appreciative.

Noguchi asks Xiaodong to pose as his girlfriend, as his mother wants him to go for matchmaking sessions. Xiaodong agrees. Mary offers Xiaodong information on Shuixing for money. Although the youngsters locate Shuixing, she refuses to acknowledge Jianye.

Mei-e spots Jinxing while she is temping at a Japanese restaurant. Noguchi arrives later with Xiaodong to refuse to the matchmaking, but Xiaodong messes up…

Xiaodong insists on taking Shuixing to Jianye, so Shuixing sets her condition: she will meet Jianye if Xiaodong can heal her crippled leg completely!

Xiaodong and Noguchi arrange for Jinxing to meet Jianye, but Jinxing leaves without a word. On asking, Jinxing tells Noguchi how his mother suffers a breakdown trying to mediate between Jianye and Jinxing. When she fell to her death after another quarrel, Jianye blames Jinxing and they fall out.

As soon as Mei-e clears Muxing’s debt, Muxing starts thinking of some big business plan again. Muxing disbelieves Mei-e when she says Jinxing is now rich and successful, for he looks down on his brother. When he witnesses it himself, he is surprised.

Muxing wants to start a swiftlet breeding business, so he tries to borrow money from Mei-e. As his entire family is against the idea, Muxing is displeased.

Xiaodong goes drinking with Haojie, and she asks Simin out to clarify the matter. As Simin refuses to believe, Haojie gets drunk. Xiaodong asks Noguchi for help to send Haojie home. On the way, Noguchi professes his love to Xiaodong…

Nako warns Noguchi not to see Xiaodong again, or she will hurt Xiaodong. Noguchi freaks out…

After booking their marriage registration date, Shuixing tells Alex she is barren. Alex acts gracious about it. Shuixing flares up when “Bread Crust” accuses her of [...] once again. On Xiaodong and Noguchi’s plea, Coco agrees to meet Jianye. Jianye feels bad when he learns of the hard life Shuixing and Coco have been leading.

Muxing tries to sell his house but Chenglong stops him in time. Muxing threatens [...] if Mei-e does not give him money to invest. When Mei-e eventually gives in, Muxing is dissatisfied she gives him only $2,000, yet he objects to her suggestion of approaching Jinxing. The following day, Muxing approaches Jinxing and Jinxing agrees to consider.

To convince Simin, Xiaodong kisses Noguchi. Ding Xie witnesses and he is mad. When Xiaodong runs off in embarrassment, someone ambushes and tries to [...] Xiaodong!

ShortSummary=Noguchi rescues Xiaodong in time, and he takes Xiaodong to confront Nako, believing Nako masterminds the attack. Nako wants Noguchi to break up with Xiaodong, but he refuses to. When Xiaodong advises Noguchi to comply, Noguchi reveals he truly likes Xiaodong. Xiaodong is stunned.

Jianye wants to file a police report but Ding Xie dissuades him, claiming it will ruin Xiaodong’s reputation. Jianye gives up. Haojie has been drowning his sorrows with drinks, so Xiaodong decides to clarify the matter with Simin. The couple finally reconcile.

After having some drinks, Liangcai is certain Xiaodong is his daughter and he tries to confirm with Jianye. Jianye chases him away, yet Liangcai becomes more convinced.

Muxing is furious when Jinxing advises him not to start his own business, for Jinxing has checked up on him. He borrows from five different loan sharks to raise the sum. Mei-e wants Muxing to return the money, but he thinks of using the sum to back a loan shark.

Noguchi discovers Nako has cancer, so he agrees to return to Japan. He asks Xiaodong along, but she needs to stay and care for Jianye. Noguchi asks Xiaodong to wait for him.

Noguchi and Xiaodong decide to arrange a meeting between Jinxing and Jianye. Xiaodong convinces Jianye with much difficulty, but the meeting ends up in an argument.

ShortSummary=Coco invites Jianye to Shuixing’s marriage registration ceremony, but he refuses to. Xiaodong and Coco try to trick Jianye there, but Jianye gives them a scolding.

As Liangcai suspects Xiaodong is his daughter, he questions her in the back alley. Ding Xie tells Jianye, so Jianye warns Xiaodong not to speak to Liangcai again. When Ding Xie sees Liangcai collecting used items of Xiaodong, he informs Jianye. Jianye confronts Liangcai, so Liangcai reveals his intention. When Jianye claims Xiaodong’s father is dead, Liangcai is stunned.

Jianye attends Shuixing’s wedding secretly. When Alex calls it off, Jianye tries to hit Alex. Shuixing stops Jianye, as he is to be blamed for her plight. Jianye feels remorse.

The police arrest the moneylender that Muxing entrusts his money with. With all his money gone, Muxing goes into hiding again.

Mei-e bumps into Jinxing, and Jinxing slips her a cheque to help Muxing out. When Muxing finds out, he returns the cheque to Jinxing and reprimands Jinxing for trying to seduce his wife again. Their confrontation makes the news and Nako is furious.

Xiaodong and Noguchi put up some notices to look for Muxing, but Chenglong misunderstands the loan sharks are responsible and tells Mei-e. When Xiaodong and Noguchi arrive at Muxing’s house, Chenglong chases them away with a chopper.

ShortSummary=Jinxing hopes Muxing can clarify the misunderstanding to the reporters, so Mei-e takes Jinxing home. They run into Noguchi and Xiaodong, but everyone fail to persuade Muxing to emerge. In the end, Xiaodong scares Muxing out of his room with cockroaches. Although Jinxing apologises to Muxing, Muxing refuses to accept. Muxing also gives Xiaodong and Noguchi a scolding when they ask him to visit Jianye.

Muxing quarrels with Chenglong as Chenglong tears his bedroom door down. Just then, someone calls Muxing to express interest in his business plan. Muxing is elated, until he discovers the investor is Nako. Nako shows Muxing some footage and claims she will release Mei-e only if Muxing attends a press conference. Muxing reluctantly agrees. After clarifying at the press conference, Muxing rushes home. It is then he realise Nako tricked him.

Before Noguchi returns to Japan, Xiaodong takes him to the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, while Noguchi entertains Xiaodong with lion dance. The couple bid farewell.

Shuixing runs into Alex and his girlfriend Suzy, but she hides her emotions. Just as Shuixing is sighing over when her true love will show up, “Bread Crust” appears before her. Shuixing runs away. Shuixing tells Coco she is worried “Bread Crust” is the one, so Coco comforts her. They run into “Bread Crust” and Shuixing screams at him. Though “Bread Crust” feels sad, he dare not pursue her.

Coco tells Xiaodong about “Bread Crust” and Alex. Jianye overhears and he confronts Alex, but accidentally pushes Alex into a drain. Alex slips into a coma, so Suzy threatens to put Jianye behind bars. When Jianye fails to return home, Xiaodong calls Coco for help. Coco asks Shuixing along, and Shuixing locates Jianye in the park. After scolding Jianye for being inconsiderate, Shuixing leaves with Coco, but Jianye discovers she stills cares for him.

Coco wants to invite Jianye over for her birthday, but both Xiaodong and Coco are clueless how to approach him. They are elated when Jianye agrees voluntarily. Xiaodong is puzzled when Jianye entrusts her with all his savings.

While celebrating Coco’s birthday, Jianye expresses his regret and Shuixing is overcome with emotions. Coco and Xiaodong feel touched.

Xiaodong helps Muxing when the loan sharks harass him. In elation, Muxing thinks of starting a sugarcane juice stall. Xiaodong agrees to help, so Muxing and Mei-e feel grateful.

Haojie discovers that Aunty Chen needs heart surgery, so he decides to break up with Simin…

Shuixing causes “Bread Crust” to fall down by accident, and he loses his job. “Bread Crust” blames Shuixing, so she apologises and promises to compensate his medical fees. “Bread Crust” seizes the chance to make Shuixing apply medication on him, and Jianye walks in on them. “Bread Crust” sneaks to Shuixing’s place, and he is disappointed when he overhears Shuixing condemning him.

Haojie is upset over breaking up with Simin, so Xiaodong tries to cheer him up. However, Haojie drowns his sorrows with drinks. When Xiaodong takes Haojie home, she discovers Liangcai is also drunk because he misses his daughter. Xiaodong knows not whether to laugh or cry when the two start sprouting nonsense.

Liangcai asks Xiaodong if she agrees to a DNA test. Jianye encourages Xiaodong to go so Liangcai can give up. Liangcai changes his mind in the last minute, for he fears the result. On realising Liangcai’s hesitation, Xiaodong agrees to let Liangcai be her “reserve dad”. Liangcai is elated.

Jianye discovers Xiaodong withdrew money from his bank account, so he questions her. Xiaodong lies that she used it to buy shares, so Jianye chases her out. Liangcai and Haojie take Xiaodong in. Xiaodong wants to check on Jianye, but Liangcai stops her. Jianye stays up all night out of concern for Xiaodong.

Xiaodong takes Mei-e and Muxing to view a stall space. Muxing likes the place but has insufficient capital. Chenglong gives his parents some cash, claiming he made them by giving tuition. In reality, Chenglong embezzles the sum from the bookie. The bookie wants Chenglong to take the rap for him, or he will expose his involvement in bet-collecting at school. When Mei-e reprimands Chenglong, Chenglong explains he did so to help Mei-e. Muxing feels guilty, so he decides to take his son’s place.

Shuixing and Coco stage an act to make Jianye forgive Xiaodong. When the police come for Jianye, they realise Jianye beat Alex up. Shuixing tries to visit Alex, but Suzy stops her and vows to sue Jianye. Shuixing tells Xiaodong, so Xiaodong visits Alex to beg him to let Jianye off. Alex seems to be sound asleep, but as soon as Xiaodong leaves, he opens his eyes.

Mei-e takes Muxing to visit Jianye when she reads about his case in the newspaper, but Muxing leaves in a huff when Shuixing reprimands him.

Shuixing suspects “Bread Crust” piled rubbish outside her home, so she returns him his money and warns him not to disturb her again. “Bread Crust” is upset he cannot vindicate himself.

Xiaodong receives a letter from Noguchi asking her out, but he fails to show. She later mistakes a lion dancer for Noguchi, and is disappointed when she finds out she is wrong. Ding Xie encourages Xiaodong, claiming Noguchi will definitely write again. Sure enough, Xiaodong receives another letter from Noguchi asking her out. Coco is happy to see Noguchi at Xiaodong’s shop, and she introduces Ben to Noguchi. Noguchi asks Ben for lion dance tips and the trio has a fun time together. Ben drugs Coco when she and Noguchi get drunk. When Coco wakes up, she misunderstands she slept with Noguchi.

Jianye visits Muxing at his stall, but a loan shark shows up. When Jianye tries to protect his grandchild, his blood pressure shoots up and Jianye passes out.

Coco pesters Noguchi, insisting he take responsibility for sleeping with her. Noguchi tells Coco he suspects Ben, but she refuses to listen.

Muxing misplaces the money while rescuing a cat, so he takes on another loan. The loan shark wants him to splash paint at some borrower’s home, so he fails to take care of Jianye. His family is upset Muxing nearly gets Jianye killed, and Mei-e wants to know where the money has gone. Muxing explains, but his family finds it hard to believe. Mei-e screams at Muxing, so he locks himself in his room again…

Chengfeng has been acting strange because of the pressure in her studies. Mei-e blames Muxing, and she warns Muxing not to get their family into anymore trouble, or she will divorce him. Muxing refuses to let Mei-e look down on him, so he decides to buck up. Unfortunately, he causes an explosion while experimenting with some new desserts…

Shuixing reveals she is barren too, so the couple make up. “Bread Crust” explains Ben hurts him when he is seeking justice for Coco, so Shuixing realises she wronged Noguchi. Shuixing interrogates Coco, who reveals Nako instigated her to lie. Noguchi and Xiaodong confront Nako, and Nako vows she will do anything to break the pair up. In anger, Noguchi wants to renounce his family. Xiaodong advises him not to.

Mei-e wants a divorce, but Muxing refuses to. He locks himself in the toilet and threatens [...]. When Jianye learns, he struggles to help Muxing…

ShortSummary= Muxing wants to kill himself as he fails to get Mei-e’s forgiveness. Jianye struggles to Muxing’s ward and he manages to stop Muxing, but Mei-e insists on getting a divorce. Although he is depressed, Muxing reconciles with Jianye.

Coco hits her tummy to vent her frustration, and she ends up in the hospital. Shuixing is worried about Coco and her unborn child, but the doctor confirms Coco is not pregnant. Shuixing is relieved.

Xiaodong discovers a newspaper clipping in Jianye’s drawer, which is identical to the clipping that Liangcai showed her. She finally realise Liangcai is her father, and they reunite.

Nako offers Xiaodong a huge sum to leave Noguchi but fails, so she kidnaps Xiaodong and threatens torture. Xiaodong refuses to be intimidated. Nako gives in, as she is only trying to test Xiaodong. Coco finally realise how much Xiaodong loves Noguchi.

Nako wants to return to Japan. Although Jinxing hopes to have a reunion with his family before the Chinese New Year, he dares not to defy his wife.

Muxing repaints his house and he vows to rebuild the home he destroyed. Mei-e begins to hesitate. Muxing and Jinxing finally resolve their differences. Muxing asks Jinxing to stay for a reunion dinner before returning to Japan, as it is Jianye’s biggest wish for the family to reunite and have another portrait taken.

On Chinese New Year eve, Nako insists on returning to Japan. Jinxing plucks the courage to tell Nako he wants to stay for the reunion dinner, but Nako objects. Jinxing decides to join his family and Nako leaves alone, but her feelings of loneliness causes her to turn back.

Jianye finally fulfils his wish, and with songs of the Chinese New Year playing in the background, the Dong family have their family portrait taken…
