List of gadgets in Alex Rider

This is a 'list of all MI6 gadgets from Anthony Horowitz'sAlex Rider'' series. Most were invented by MI6 agent Smithers.

A

"Attack-tuk" tuk-tuk : Hides a missile in the front headlight and a machine gun controlled by the handlebars. Is mentioned but does not appear in Snakehead.

B

Ballpoint pen : Once stabbed into an enemy, it causes them to obey every command. Appeared in the film adaptation of Stormbreaker.
Belt : The buckle conceals a toughened plastic knife that will not show on airport x-ray machines; breaking the belt open reveals a survival kit made up of matches, medicines, water-purifying tablets and knockout pills specialized in snakes. Appeared in Snakehead; Alex is never able to use it as double-agent Ash tells the villain AbOUT it.
Bicycle : Smithers goes AWOL and gives Alex a bicycle at the risk of losing his job. To date, this is Alex's most complex gadget. The bicycle pump doubles as a smokescreen, the headlamp contains a magnesium flare, the handlebar ejects missiles, the water bottle spurts oil, the seat ejects, the trailraider jersey is bulletproof, and the bicycle clips are magnetic. It also comes with a note on the underside of the seat signed by Smithers: If you can read this, you owe me a new bicycle. Appeared in Eagle Strike.
"Bubble-07" chewing gum : upon being chewed, it expands and shatters virtually any substance.. Appeared in Skeleton Key.
Buddha hand grenade : upon twisting the head twice it will kill (or incapacitate) anyone within 10 metres. Appeared in Snakehead.

C

Coins (10, 5 and 1 baht) : magnetic explosive devices. They are detonated using a chewing gum packet. Appeared in Snakehead.
Chewing gum packet : detonates coins; on the inside there are three numbered switches. Appeared in Snakehead.

E

Ear stud : a powerful explosive,destroys a jail gate. Appeared in Point Blanc.
Edible Hat : a wooly hat designed to provide emergency rations to agents in the field. Mentioned in Alex Rider: The Gadgets.

F

"Fan club" : there are thin layers of galvanized steel hidden under the silk. When the fan is folded, it can be used as a club. Appeared in Snakehead.

G

Game Boy : a miniature supercomputer in disguise. Each of the four games activated a different feature. "Nemesis" converts the console into a fax machine and photocopier, "Exocet", an X-ray machine and an audio function, "Speed Wars", a bug and microphone finder, and "Bomber Boy", a smoke bomb, activated by pressing "START" three times on the games console. Appeared in Stormbreaker. It was changed into a Nintendo DS for the film adaptation.

H

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (hardback EDition) : upon pressing the author's name, a potent tranquilizer dart is deployed. Appeared in Point Blanc.
Head Off Shoulders Shampoo : add water and you trigger the plastic explosive (Theory). Mentioned in Alex Rider: The Gadgets.

I

Inhaler : fingerprint-sensitive. Puffs out knockout gas and acts as a grenade. This gadget was chosen by a Blue Peter competition in 2006. Appeared in Ark Angel.
Incense : after thirty seconds, it causes anyone nearby to vomit. Appeared in Snakehead.
iPod : includes microwave technology that picks up distant noises. Appeared in Ark Angel.

M

"Model 5" mobile phone : has a direct link to MI6 from anywhere in the world. Works underwater and in space. The pads are fingerprint-sensitive so only Alex can operate it. The also includes a built-in stunner needle, when Alex presses 999, a drugged aerial shoots out. Appeared in Skeleton Key.
"Model 7" ("Hands Free") mobile phone : same as model 5, but contained small amount of plastic explosive which is triggered by a mercury switch if a phone number is dialled upside down Mentioned in Skeleton Key.

P

Parachute Poncho : a woolen poncho designed to act as a parachute. This light green poncho contains a rip cord and harness straps hidden in the thick material (Theory). Mentioned in Skeleton Key.

S

Ski goggles : include an infrared function. Appeared in Point Blanc.
Ski suit : bulletproof. Appeared in Point Blanc.
Sony Discman : a diamond-tipped Beethoven CD is inserted, it becomes an electric saw. The audio player also a built-in distress beacon activated when fast-forward is pressed three times. Appeared in Point Blanc.
"Stingo" mosquito repellent : a clear liquid that attracts all insects. Appears in Ark Angel.
"The Striker," : a small keyring which was a facsimile of a famous person. In the United States release of the book, it was Tiger Woods, in the U.K release, it was of footballer Michael Owen. When the toy's head is twisted round twice clockwise and once counterclockwise, a stun grenade with a ten-second fuse is activated. Appeared in Skeleton Key.

T

Tooth retainer : includes a built-in panic button and tracking device. Appeared in Scorpia.

W

Watch : the watch does not tell the time and the hands do not move, owing to Alex's cover, but upon setting the time to 11-o-clock, the watch sends out a homing signal to be detected by anyone in the world. Appeared in Snakehead.

Y

Yo-yo : a black toy that hides thirty yards of advanced nylon which can lift weights of up to 100 kilograms. Appeared in Stormbreaker.

Z

"Zit-Clean" : a spot cream that is harmless to skin but can dissolve the strongest of metals. Appeared in Stormbreaker and Point Blanc.
