List of Dragon Quest characters
The following is a list of characters in the Dragon Quest franchise.
Main characters
Hero
The Heroes of Dragon Quest vary for each video game.
- The Hero of Dragon Warrior is the descendant of Erdrick. He came from an unknown location to help the land of Alefgard when it was under the threat of Dragonlord.
- The Hero of Dragon Warrior II is the Prince of Lorasia who is one of the playable characters in the game. He is a descendant of Erdrick who responds to the rising threat of Hargon.
- The Hero of Dragon Warrior III is the son of the legendary warrior Ortega who was sent to destroy Baramos and Zoma before they destroy the world.
- The Hero of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen is an 18-Year-Old Man or Woman (depending on the player of the game) who is prophesized to defeat Psaro and save the world from the rising tide of demons.
- The Hero of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is the son of Pankraz.
- The Hero of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation is a citizen of Weaver's Peak who is destined to defeat the Dread Fiend Murdraw.
- The Hero of Dragon Warrior VII is the son of a prominent fisherman from the town of Fishbel on Estard Island.
- The Hero of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is a 20-Year-Old low-ranking royal guardsman at Trodain Castle and among the few who survived Dhoulmagus' attack.
- The Hero of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is a male or female (depending on the player of the game) that was originally a Celestrian.
Erdrick
Erdrick is the legendary hero from the Dragon Quest franchise and the main character in Dragon Warrior III. In that game, he follows in the footsteps of his father Ortega in order to defeat the archfiend Baramos and then the Master Archfiend named Zoma.
Villains
Dragonlord
Dragonlord is the main antagonist of the Dragon Quest franchise. He started out as a lonely man from Alefgard who discovered a dragon in a cave and discovered that he can control the Dragon. The man became Dragonlord and moved into Charlock Castle. Dragonlord then steals the Ball of Light from Tantegel Castle, and plots to unleash his forces of darkness upon Alefgard. He kidnaps Princess Gwaelin for unknown reasons, and set one of his dragons to guard her. When encountered by the hero, Dragonlord will offer to split one half of the world for him to rule. When the player chooses no, Dragonlord attacks the hero. When taking half the damage in the battle, Dragonlord can transform into a purple dragon. The hero managed to slay Dragonlord.
In Dragon Warrior II, it is revealed that Dragonlord had a nicer grandson who now lives at Charlock Castle. He offers the players advice on how to defeat Hargon.
In Captain N: The Game Master, Dragonlord (VOICED by Gary Chalk) is a huge red dragon of near-Donkey Kong size. Dragonlord makes multiple attempts to rule Dragon's Den, the world of Dragon Warrior. Intelligent, if somewhat gullible, he uses both his size and his magical powers to further his goal of conquering his world and ruling over all its citizens.
Hargon
Hargon is the sorcerer of Rhone who is the main antagonist of Dragon Warrior II. At the beginning of the game, Hargon's minions attacked Moonbrooke Castle where they killed its king and destroyed the palace. When Hargon is defeated, the descendants of Erdrick from Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke discover that Hargon was in fact a corrupt cleric who planned to summon Malroth: God of Destruction.
Malroth
Malroth is God of Destruction that is the final boss of Dragon Warrior II. Malroth is a large demon that has four arms, large bat-like wings, and a snake for a tail. He is also known as the Destroyer who that hungers for the eradication of everything. Hargon plotted to summon Malroth. When the hero defeats Hargon, Malroth appears upon being successfully summoned to Hargon's throne room. The hero managed to defeat Malroth.
Baramos
Baramos is an archfiend who is one of the main villains in Dragon Warrior III. He made his headquarters in Charlock Castle. He was thought to be the final boss of the video game until it turned out that Baramos is actually an underling of Zoma.
Zoma
Zoma is an archfiend who is one of the main villains in Dragon Warrior III. He is the Master Archfiend of the Dark World who appears following Baramos' defeat.
Psaro
Psaro is a human-like demon who is the main villain of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. Psaro later learns the secrets of evolution and becomes Psaro the Manslayer.
Estark
Estark is a demon who is one of the main villains in Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. He is referred to as the Lord of the Underworld.
Ladja
Ladja is a bishop who is one of the main villains in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. He is responsible for [...] the hero's father Pankraz during his attack on Pankraz' village. The hero later kills Ladja avenging Pankraz.
Grandmaster Nimzo
Grandmaster Nimzo is an elderly green-skinned demon who is one of the main villains in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. He is worshipped by Ladja and the Order of Zugzwang.
Murdaw
Murdaw is a Dread Fiend that is the main villain of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. He terrorizes the world and anyone who dared challenge him have never returned.
Orgodemir
Orgodemir is the main villain of Dragon Warrior VII. He has various forms and sought to replace God and have the world sealed away to keep God from being resurrected. He is defeated by the hero and his party.
Dhoulmagus
Dhoulmagus is a human who is one of the main villains in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. He was once a jester Dhoulmagus became resentful towards the inhabitants of Trodain Castle for ridiculing him. He broke into Trodain Castle's secret chamber to obtain the Staff of Rhapthorne where Dhoulmagus was overwhelemed by its magic. While possessed by Rhapthorne, Dhoulmagus killed his first four victims: his former master Rylus, the swordsman Alistair (Jessica's brother), Abbot Francisco, and Mr. Golding (the casino owner). The Hero and his party eventually defeated him after a long chase where the sceptor's dark influence transformed him into a monstrous creature. Upon his defeat, King Trode discovered that the curse on him and his daughter Medea had not been broken as Rapthorne starts to make himself known.
Rapthorne
Rapthorne is a demon who is one of the main villains in Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. Rapthorne is the Lord of Darkness who had power over the World of Darkness and planned to take control of the World of Light. The Seven Sages defeated him and imprisoned his soul in the magic scepter of Trodain Castle while his physical form is entombed within the Goddess Statue on the Holy Isle of Neos. When Dhoulmagus obtained the scepter that had his soul, Rapthorne used Dhoulmagus as a pawn in order to kill the descendants of the Seven Sages that imprisoned him. Following Dhoulmagus' defeat, Rapthorne's soul reunited with his physical form and attacked the hero. The hero and his party managed to defeat Rapthorne.
Corvus
Corvus is a Celestrian who is the main villain of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. He was the original Celestrian guardian of Wormwood Creek where he was wounded during the fight against the Gittish Empire. While hiding out in a cave to recuperate, his lover Serena accidentally gave Corvus a sleeping potion which caused him to fall asleep. King Godwyn's forces came into the cave and captured Corvus' body where it ended up imprisoned. During his imprisonment, Corvus developed a deep resentment towards the human who have "betrayed" him. His power grew where it struck the Realm of the Almighty enough to injure King Zenus into seclusion and even revived the evil dragon Barbarus. When he is finally confronted by the hero following King Godwyn's defeat, Corvus ends up attacking the hero. He then ascends with Barbarus to the Realm of the Almighty where he ends up corrupting it into the Realm of the Mighty. With the aid of Serena's ghost, the hero ascends to the Realm of the Almighty to fight Corvus. Following Barbarus' defeat, the hero then fights and defeats Corvus. Serena's ghost finds Corvus and invites him to join her. Corvus turns from his evil power and goes with Serena's ghost.
King Godwyn
King Godwyn is the secondary antagonist of Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies. He and his army were once defeated by Greygnarl. When Corvus became resentful towards humans, his growing power revives King Godwyn in order to bring the world to RUiN. He was defeated by the hero.
Other characters
- King Lorik - King Lorik is the king of Alefgard in Dragon Warrior. He calls upon the hero to find his daughter Princess Gwaelin (who had been captured by Dragonlord) and recovering the Ball of Light. When the hero defeats Dragonlord and returns Princess Gwaelin and the Ball of Light to King Lorik, he offers the hero to inherit the throne. The hero declines the offer and leaves to go explore the uncharted lands outside of Alefgard.
- Princess Gwaelin - Princess Gwaelin is the daughter of King Lorik who appears in Dragon Warrior. She is also known as Laura or Lora in other versions of the game. She was captured by Dragonlord. Once rescued by the hero, Princess Gwaelin bestows her love upon him which acts as a compass by giving the north/south and east/west coordinates from Tantagel Castle for the hero's current location in Alefgard on the overworld map. After the events of the first game, the hero and Princess Gwaelin get married and settle in Torland. They have three children who establish the kingdoms of Midenhall, Cannock, and Moonbrooke. 100 years later, their descendants become the heroes of Dragon Warrior II.

- Archdemon - The Archdemons are demons that have wings, horns, a spiked tail, and wield pitchforks as weapons.
- Army Ant - The Army Ants appear as enemies in Dragon Warrior II. They are large in size and are a green/blue color.
- Badboon - The Badboons are baboon-like enemies that appear in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Big Badboon - A Badboon that can't cast magic.

- Basilisk - The Basilisk are cobra-like enemies in Dragon Warrior II.
- King Cobra -
- Berserker - The Berserker are crazed humanoids that appear in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Warrior VII, and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

- Bewarewolf - Bewarewolf is a bipedal wolf with purple fur and orange clothes.
- Scarewolf - Scarewolf is a bipedal wolf with brown fur and gray clothes.
- Tearwolf - Tearwolf is a bipedal wolf with yellow fur and blue clothes.
- Big Slug - A large shiny yellow slug that appears in Dragon Warrior II.
- Bubble Slime - A slime that is more fluid and green in comparison to the other Slimes.
- Carnivog - A man-eating plant that appears in Dragon Warrior II.
- Centipod - A large armored centipede that appears in Dragon Warrior II.
- Chimaera - A monster that has the head and wings of a vulture and the body of a snake. It was originally called Wyvern.
- Hocus Chimaera - A Chimaera that can cast spells.
- Cosmic Chimaera - A Chimaera that usually forgoes damaging spells.
- Cyclops - The Cyclopes in the Dragon Quest franchise are one-eyed giants with super-strength.
- Gigantes - The Gigantes is a powerful version of the Cyclops.
- Dancing Flame - A human-shaped being made of fire that appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
- Frostburn - An icy version of Dancing Flame that appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
- Dracky - A bat-like monster that is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest franchise.
- Drackmage - A type of Dracky that can cast spells.
- Drackyma - A type of Dracky that can cast better spells.

- Ghost - The Ghosts of the Dragon Quest franchise are shown to wear witch's hats.
- Poltergeist - The Poltergeists are purple Ghosts with green hats.
- Spectres - The Spectres are green Ghosts that wear either orange hats or brown hats.
- Green Dragon - The Green Dragon is a recurring monster in the Dragon Quest franchise.
- Blue Dragon - The Blue Dragons are found in the dungeons of Charlock Castle. They are stronger than Green Dragons and weaker than Red Dragons.
- Red Dragon - The Red Dragon is stronger than the Green Dragon or the Blue Dragon.
- Drohl Drone - The Drohl Drone is a bizarre snail-like creature.
- Drohl Diabolist - The Drohl Diabolist is a Drohl that can cast magic.
- Eyelasher - A tentacled eye that appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.

- Fat Rat - An obese rat that appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
- Dirty Rat - The Dirty Rat appears in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
- Gargoyle - that appears in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
- Gas -
- Golem - The Golem is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest franchise. The common Golems are made out of clay bricks. In Dragon Warrior, defeating a Golem is required in order to proceed to Mercado.
- Gold Golem - The Gold Golem is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest franchise. It is a golem that is made of bullions. Defeating a Gold Golem will award the players with a lot of gold.
- Stone Golem - The Stone Golem is a gray Golem which can either be strong or weak.
- Knight - A corrupted human in armor.
- Axe Knight - A bulky Knight that wields an axe.
- Armored Knight - The Armored Knight is a red version of Axe Knight.
- Lunatick - The Lunatick is a monster that resembles an eye with tentacles.
- Raving Lunatick - A Lunatick that can cast basic magic.
- Magician - The Magician is a mysterious figure in a gray hooded robe with no discernible physical characteristics.
- Warlock - The Warlock is a mysterious figure in a red hooded robe and are more capable than Magicians.
- Wizard - The Wizard vary in every game ranging from mysterious figures in yellow hooded robes or small wrinkly winged humanoids.
- Mean Spirit - A ghost-like enemy that appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Muddy Hand - A hand that is made out of mud and is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest franchise.
- Bloody Hand - A red version of Muddy Hand.
- Orc - The Orcs are a race of pig-headed monsters that appear in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
- Scorpion - In the Dragon Quest franchise, the Scorpions are depicted to be the size of humans.
- Iron Scorpion - The Iron Scorpion is a Scorpion that has iron skin.
- Rogue Scorpion -
- Shaman - A humanoid enemy that wears a hooded robe with a bat insignia in the front. It appears in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Warrior VII, and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Magus - The Magus appears in Dragon Warrior II and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Sorcerer - The Sorcerers appear in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Wrecktor - The Wrecktors are ridiculously strong enemies. They appear in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, Dragon Warrior VII.
- Skeleton - The Skeletons in the Dragon Quest franchise are depicted to be shown in armor.
- Dark Skeleton - The Dark Skeletons are the strongest of the Skeletons
- Skeleton Soldier - The Skeleton Soldiers are stronger than the normal Skeletons.

- Slime - The Slimes are the weaker enemies in the Dragon Quest franchise and serve as its mascot. They resemble water drops with eyes and a mouth.
- She-Slime - A reddish version of Slime.
- Metal Slime - A gray version of Slime with a metallic body.
- Walking Corpse - A reanimated corpse that is in the zombie category that is a recurring enemy in the Dragon Quest franchise.
- Corpse Corporal - A stronger version of Walking Corpse that appears in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, and Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation''.
- Toxic Zombie - A stronger version of Walking Corpse that specializes in toxic attacks. It appears in Dragon Warrior II, Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, Dragon Warrior VII,Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, andDragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies''.

- Atlas - A giant orange cyclops that is a mini-boss in Hargon's Castle as seen in Dragon Warrior II.
- Belial - An archdemon who appears in Dragon Warrior II. He is the last of a trio of bosses the players must face when they are climbing the tower of Hargon's Castle.
- Bjørn the Behemoose - An ancient demon that appears in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
- Boss Troll - The leader of the Trolls that appears in Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, and Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.
- Dwight - A dwarf that appears in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride.
- Haunted Housekeeper - The first boss of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. It is behind the hauntings at Uptaten Towers.
- Kandar - Kandar is a recurring boss that appears in Dragon Warrior III.

- King Korol - King Korol appears in Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride. He is the founder of the Order of Zugzwang.
