Las Vegas Corporate Challenge

The Las Vegas Corporate Challenge is an Olympic-style of competition hosted by the Las Vegas Parks and Leisure Activities Department. The largest amateur athletic event in the state of Nevada several companies and organizations in southern Nevada compete against each other in 4 divisions based on the number of employees each group has.

History

The City of Las Vegas Corporate Challenge Competition started in 1986 with 18 teams competing in 15 events totaling 1,500 participants. By 1994 the event had grown to 27 events and 95 teams with more than 10 times the participants totaling 16,323 competitors. The most recent corporate challenge competition (2008) had a total of 33 events with a total of 83 companies with Wynn Las Vegas taking the gold in the A division, Southwest Gas in the B division, PBS&J/Ninyo & Moore in C division, and John A Martin & Assoc. in the D division.

Teams are put into groups based on the sizes of their companies. Divisions are based on total employee headcount and not total participants.

Smaller companies in the D division are allowed to compete together as a team so as to have enough participants if needed.

Points and awards

The top 3 teams in each of the 4 divisions of each event get a metal for each participant in that event, Gold for first, Silver for second, Bronze for third. The top 6 teams of each event in each division earn points towards the overall rankings of the event. The top 3 companies in each division get a trophy.

Points are awarded as follows

  • 10 points for 1st place
  • 8 points for 2nd place
  • 6 points for 3rd place
  • 4 points for 4th place
  • 3 points for 5th place
  • 2 points will tie for 5th place*
  • 1 point for 6th place

* In the event of a tie for fifth place, both teams receive two points each and no points are awarded for sixth place.

Bonus points

Teams can also earn what are considered "Bonus Points" for things like volunteering, attending captains and company coordinator meetings, donating blood, participating in various ceremonies like the torch relay and parade of banners.
