Lakshman Ganesh Thatte
Laxman Ganesh Thatte, also known as Kartar Singh Thatte, was a maverick Hindu right wing activist.
He contested several elections, either as a hobby or to make political points on a wider stage, but he always lost. He was an activist associated with Hindu Maha Sabha. He contested the first Indian Presidential Election in 1952 in which Rajendra Prasad was elected. He attracted notoriety for going to the office of Marathi daily Lok Satta with a cane in 1980s, and beating writer Vijay Tendulkar whose writing Thatte objected to, on the grounds that it hurt sentiments of Hindus.
He had adopted Sikh religion in 1970s so that he could carry weapons which Sikhs are allowed to carry on religious grounds, and taken the name Kartar Singh Thatte. He contested several elections under that name as well. But later he came back to Hindu religion and changed his name back to the original Lakshman Ganesh Thatte.
