Labbe (dog)

A Labbe (also called the Beagador and the Labeagleis) is a mixed breed dog, a hybrid cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Beagle. The name "Labbe" was coined in 2008 by combining “Lab” from Labrador Retriever, and “be” from "Beagle". Labrador hybrids have become increasingly popular, as evidenced by the Labradoodle hydrid, and it is likely that the combination of Labrador Retriever and Beagle has been duplicated by breeders in various countries at different times.

It is considered a hybrid dog, meaning it is not purebred; however, the lineage is known.

History

The first Labbes were likely due to accidental breeding between Labrador Retrievers and Beagles. Later, intentional crossing of was done in North America, England and Australia.

Desirability of crossbreeding

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is, by a large margin, the most popular breed by registration in Canada, the United States (since 1991), and the United Kingdom, thus its popularity in crossbreeding.

The modern breed of Beagle was developed in Great Britain around the 1830s from several breeds, including the Talbot Hound, the North Country Beagle, the Southern Hound, and possibly the Harrier, and is a small to medium-sized dog. They are popular as pets because of their size, even temper, and lack of inherited health problems.

Breed characteristics

The Labbe can have the Beagle head with a tricolor coat in the tones of Labrador. They are a very good companion or guard dog. The body tends to be more the size of a Beagle but slightly longer. The coat is usually very short. The Labbe is considered an intelligent dog that can learn new things quickly. The breed is relatively quiet but does have a strong bark that can end with a howling sound, like a Beagle.
