Kristen Crowell

Kristen Crowell is an activist and political consultant from Wisconsin. She led the labor union-backed political organization We Are Wisconsin that supported Democratic Party candidates including Tom Barrett during the 2012 Wisconsin recall elections. Crowell served as spokesperson for the group during both the recall and the general elections.

Career

Crowell heads United Working Families, a political organization made up of community and labor allies building independent power in Chicago.

She also headed the A Better Illinois coalition, composed of more than 450 prominent community organizations and civic leaders of progressive groups that attempted to enact a fair tax structure in the 2014 legislative session and referendum election. Led by progressive groups and trade unions, it included parents, seniors, homeowners and small business owners; educators, health care and human service providers; taxpayers, and families.

The coalition sought to change the Illinois income tax system from a flat tax to a system with lower rates on lower incomes and higher rates on higher incomes. The effort stalled in 2014 when the state legislature failed to advance legislation to put the question onto a referendum ballot.

In 2012, she led We Are Wisconsin, a union-supported organization that supported Democratic candidates Tom Barrett for Wisconsin Governor, Tammy Baldwin for U.S. Senate, and Barack Obama for President of the United States.

Prior to joining We Are Wisconsin, Crowell worked for Progressive Majority Wisconsin.
